Milling beams 6x6, 8x8

To mill beams from logs, is it preferable to have them centered around the pitch?

To elaborate more, say I have white oak log. The biggest square profile beam i can cut from it should fit inside the sap wood.

Or is it better to cut in two halfs or four quarters and make the pitch to be one of the edges?

They will be the most stable when you center the pith in both ends of the beam.

Second will be, to make sure you have NO pith in a beam at all...

Some woods are more forgiving than others though...

I would think a beam should be a rectangle. A vertical member would be more suited to a square.

I milled out some 8x8's yesterday,

There's also a few 2x6's in the load too,

and then, all the slab wood was cut up for firewood,
