Joihn Deere 55 v on Craigslist for $49

The ad for this saw turned up on Orlando Craigslist a few weeks ago for $49. The guy was only available on weekends to show it. I managed to go look at it yesterday and bought it on the spot. The guy said it was his Dad's and had been sitting for quite a few years. I brought it home and dumped out the old fuel mix, flushed it out and added fresh mix. It fired right up on the 4th or 5th pull ! I went out and made several cuts in a piece of wild cherry and it runs very strong. It was covered with dust so I was very surprised after cleaning it up to see it looks almost new.
The only thing missing is the side cover above the exhaust if they came with one. Reason I'm wondering is there's a video of one on Youtube that also doesn't have a cover.
I sure would appreciate any information someone could share about it. I know it was made by Echo. The tag says Kioritz 55v
    001687TY.

    Nice saw!
The 55V is a Echo CS-500VL. I'm pretty sure it should have the cover over the exhaust.

Oh ....yes...the JD 55v. I have a few hours loged on one of those! When I was 15 I told my dad if he bought a chainsaw, I'd run it. This is what we ended up with. We bought it new. I want to find one someday! I have a JD50v parts saw.

As memory serves me there wasn't a cover over the cylinder/exhaust. Look at the screw holes.....has there ever been a screw in them? Is the paint still intact?

If my memory serves correct, there was a Hullabalou about the bottom exhaust designs of which some of these were originally, like the 302. Western Forestry Service claimed that the design was prone to starting a fire if left idleing on the ground in dry weeds. Echo changed the line and hung a muffler on the side like Homelite. Customers with units in the field were offered an exhaust 'kit' with a side outlet.

    Nice.

That saw is seriously clean, doesn't appear to have seen much, if any, use.

    Thanks for the feedback !

Thanks guys. I appreciate your affirmation of my Deere.

Thanks Modifiedmark for matching the Echo Model # for me. I found a Youtube video of an Echo CS-500VL. Other than paint color, it appears identical to my JD 55V.

And to Manyhobies, there was no cover over the exhaust on the Echo either and the owner confirmed it came that way. The holes in my saw are clean and painted so they I don't think they ever had screws threaded in them.

And to rmh3481, I set it down on the ground to move a log and noticed the exhaust on the bottom was blowing the leaves around. I could see a potential fire hazard. No problem for me as I've decided ( as was suggested by a few here ) to make this thing a shelf queen. Other than an old Poulan I bought new, I've never had a saw this clean and purty.

Thanks again everyone. This is a great forum. I don't participate much, but only because I don't think I have much to say that anyone else would care about, but I enjoy reading through all your posts.

Man, that is a SWEET looking saw!

Also, because it is basically an Echo 500-VL, would it be possible that it would be covered on the old recall?

Nice score! That is the same saw my FIL has been running since 1980 but his is in not near that condition. I'm trying to remember what the muffler looks like on his, as others have said I think there is a cover over it. You have a firewood work horse there. Congrats.

I looked up the recall online and my guess is it probably is the same as the Echo although I can't find anything John Deere specific.
From what I read, the problem would only occur if the owner was to try and remove the flywheel to service the points or condenser without using the proper tool.

    Thanks for the picture.

My guess is since there are threaded holes cast in for a cover, they originally planned on putting one on them and changed their mind.
Is your Echo a CDI ignition or do you have a "recalled" one that you didn't turn in ?
