Mystery tree

A mystery to me at least. Anyone know what this is? It was a street tree that got toppled by some ice. Super hard to split and fibrous. Sometimes the maul would bounce off of it several times in a row.

I'd agree with that. Does it have an unusual stink to it?

It doesn't smell like much of anything. Maybe a little bit like cut grass.

I though ailanthus was a blonde wood? This has a dark heart wood. Darker than cherry.

Not all trees form heartwood. What you're likely seeing is discolored wood or false heartwood.

Bark does look like Ailanthus
