True, though it's up to you whether or not you make a move that causes too much pain. As to the tired part, there's nothing wrong with that at the end of the day. If you're too tired in the tree then you can always slow down whatever you're doing or stop and rest :)

Which parts of climbing are causing you too much pain? I've been thinking of wearing some kind of knee pads for when I climb close to the tie-in point and end up supporting myself against the trunk with my knees (for instance).

In the past I used some shin gaurds (soft padded) that are used in barrel racing for the riders as they turn and knock the barrels with their legs. They certainly helped with the pain from knees against the trunk as you mentioned above, but they did cause your lower legs to sweat and the straps could get to irritating your legs. it was a toss up.
