I used the OEM ones. I did not look up an aftermarket one, but I could mic them for you. Probably worth having options as more and more is phased out.

Good GTG?

The GTG was great. Not too many old saws except for Lee Harvey's stuff. All pretty impressive.
There was a Dolmar 5100 (I think that was the model number) modified somewhat for max RPM's It was running on alcohol. The owner was able to pin a tach that had a top reading of 19,100 rpm. Sounded scary.
I think I had the only Poulan there but I could have missed one.
I would say there was around 100 people there with saws. Lots of ported stuff. Some very fast. Some cut like stock.

The Oregon rep was there with some of the new Oregon SpeedCut bar and chain combos. It's a laminated bar with a steel shell and aluminum in the middle. It's stuck together with a special adhesive. It's a narrow kerf bar and chain. They painted this bar rather than powder coat to keep the paint off the rails and out of the groove. The sprocket tip is not replaceable. I got a chance to cut with one. It was quite fast, very light and very smooth. Apparently it's going to be priced at a somewhat economy level. Only available in .325 for saws in the 38 -65 cc range.

I had forgotten what it was like to cut some green wood. Pretty impressive compared to the dry white ash I've been cutting up over the past three years. No dust and lots of chips flying fast. The Poulan and the Homelite behaved but the ignition was acting up on the Mac. Not sure if it's the wire, plug or the module. It was misfiring under load.

Messed my back up around noon pretty good. It seems like I'm going to or coming back from GTG's in less than ideal shape.

Good on you for making those drives to the GTG's Tim. I will have to find the time to try and get down to something in Washington or make the long drive to the one in Oregon. I will be heading back out to Saskatchewan (Prince Albert region) the summer of 2018 for a week or two at the cabin. Would take some saws if there were something within a modest drive and the timing were right.

I am glad to hear you ran one of those new bars. I was trying to figure out what they were all about. Are they a standard profile 0.325" drum sprocket setup? No special drum sprockets/rims? I would imagine they would be the bee's knees on a 3000 and the like.

It is a treat to cut the fresh wood. My favorites are the Douglas Firs that have just expired. Chips and aroma are sublime. The plus of all the big softwood out here in BC is they make your saws run about two gears faster as well.

On a side note, I have my eye on a 285 from out of town. It has the later style chain brake and cover. Likely the same style as on your 336. Are those plastic or metal clutch covers?

No special equipment required on the Oregon Speedcut

The 336 brake and cover are plastic.
The brake wasn't working right so I had it apart. I think the plastic ones are all the same design and parts except for the flag height and clutch cover size.
I have a 285 with the metal brake. The brake band is broken and scarce.

Hey Fossil, I hope your back is better . Have wanted to ask someone that has cut with the new SpeedCut bar and chain if it was a noticable improvement over the old micro lite or pro lite and 95vp system ? Thanks for posting the SpeedCut information .
