Merry Christmas Fish.
- Lakes would be proud of ya.
i am often wrong too :)

Yes, it may be timing. unplugging the wire or turning off the kill switch
would isolate that.
Barring that, then empty the fuel and dry out the cyl to eliminate hydro-lock
from fuel, look and make sure no excess oil at the plug, then the carbon would be the next look, it doesn't take much to really kick up the ratio.

Fish If it was carboned up wouldn't it pull hard all the time instead of intermittent, same with the timing, hydro locking it should take 10 to 20 pulls with the throttle held open to get it unflooded, if ever if it's leaking gas into the cylinder. . I think start with the recoil and rope, it's a old saw and they could be wore. Steve

Hard to say, but a wore out starter puller or rope would slip or break.

Excess carbon may give intermittant symptoms due to differing temps,
expansion rates of the metals, etc.
But I partied too much during my college physics classes to be more
elaborate.....
A bit of dain bramage....

I guess carbon might act erratic but it's a lot easier to check the starer first. My 044 can act like that, if you don't give it GOOD pull it will pull back, I blame that on advanced timing, high compression and a too small recoil. Steve

Bad coil can work intermitant / good / bad ...not just bad .02c

gremlins.

i had a 026 that would do the same thing. it wa so hard to pull over sometimes that the cahin brake handle would wack you in the knuckles)

had clean p/c and ports.
didn't matter if the switch was on or off.
still did it after a new carb install (unrelated problem).

gremlins.

if not gremlins, then fish outlined the best way to figure it out.

Did you play with the gasket thickness or cylinder edge?
