Some say they are called box elder trees because the wood smells like a flock of black and orange box elder bugs. That's probably not the reason, but man, it does wreak when cut green. Eventually the smell disappears but it takes awhile. I try to avoid it for fuel wood.
Smells terrible when burned until the bark is gone and it's starting to coal up. Then it smells good.
