Like I said it leaned probably 45 degrees down the hill, and was over 5ft on the stump. The center was rotted, I bored my backside and right behind the face (vertical bore). A boring back cut is fantasy land for a tree of this caliber and for the situation I was in. Did I mention the top was burning?
Thanks for the comments.

I can't help but to wonder how loud that was went it ripped and went

Here's a pick of a doug fir I cut on a fire this past summer. I was using a 42" bar on a MS660. The tree was probably 5+ ft on the butt and seriously leaned at probably a 45 degree angle toward the road. A shallow under cut and the end result is...

Hey Slinger,
Hope ya don't mind.
But, I'm gonna use that pic on my desktop.

Also, yer Stihl looks DANG Impressive in that last pic.

And I'd like to add...

No offense w/ the "boring back-cut" comment. I'm the first to admit I have NO experience w/ trees that big. Simply a technique that's worked good for me on our "considerably smaller" Montana leaners. :)

Awesome pic!

When I was in my twenties I saw the guy I worked for cut two barber chaired, huge poplars that were blown over by a storm. The trees were 4' and 5' in diameter DBH. They splintered and the popping sound was deafening. The second one shot back, hit him in the chest and drove his foot in the ground... Buried it. He too finished work that day!

And that's why I didn't say any more about it before. There are way more variables in cutting a burning tree than a green one or even just a snag.

Anybody who's not a believer in the full wrap and big dogs, take a closer look at his pics. NFW you could do that with a single sissy dog and half wrap.

Here's a pic of me cutting a burned out at the bottom and burning up top 4' grand fir. 440 w/ a 28" bar.
