I've got a smaller american elm(8-10" trunk) that this summer has started oozing on one side of it's trunk. the wound seems to progress up the trunk not really around it. I see slight bulging on the upper parts but at the bottom it is oozing. I read the article on the oozing trees during a search but wasn't really sure about the chemical treatment of it. while I've got no problem cutting it down(to make room for my hammock!) I would like to try and save it. I live in central illinois. Or is my best remedy just to try and gouge out the damaged area to try and dry it out. we have had an exceptionally wet summer/spring so far. thanks for any help.

Pictures are always helpful when trying to give advice. However, what you describes sounds like (bacterial) slime flux. If you do a search on this forum with the key word "flux" this should bring up several threads with some helpful information.
