    Lost 4WD in woodhauler

Me and a friend were going to drop off 2 loads of wood at a farmer we know today when things went bad. After my friend got his truck backed up to the door I started to back up when I got hung up in a snow drift with my Dakota. In our attempt to rock it out a nice loud "BANG!" came from the front and there went the 4WD. Later I pulled off the front diff. cover and was greeted by these:

the top and bottom pinon gears out of the differential case. Thankfully a salvage yard has the parts I need so I can get 'er back into service soon.

I wouldn't suggest that in the front axle...unless your steering with your go pedal!

salvage yard generally sells the whole axle together...don't the the wrong ratio!

I tried that a long time ago.

reminds me that i have a dana 70 to pull down right after i r/r the nv4500 and fix a little freeze plug situation as well.

    three different trucks.

heck, i might do the dana first...

What he said - Make sure your front & rear are matched, one will be pulling more or less if not & you'll be doing another teardown before you know it.

if you were rocking and not 1 wheel spinnin' like a mofo, wonder if a roll pin sheared and let the pin work it's way out? i've had thathappen....

drove 5 miles home, make a big sweep and stop (as i was going to back into the parking space), slide it into reverse, let the clutch out, bam.

same thing, exploded spider gears, and the pin shattered in 1/2....

If you look, they also call the pinion gear a pinion gear. they can't be different and have the same name. Us rednecks call the gears you broke the spider gears.

My '96 with the NV 4500 came with the Dana 80. Think it was mandatory with the stick in those years.

I actually said somethin' along those lines...then decided to agree! It's easier than arguin' with paper work! Just hope he explains well which parts he actually needs!
