Huskee 22 ton 6.5 hp wood splitter

    Hey guys,
Just found this site as this is the first year I started to heat my house with wood. I bought a Jotul FC3B used and installed it back in October. I recently bought the Huskee 22 ton 6.5 hp wood splitter from Tractor supply. This thing is great! Here is a video of me splitting a 40" oak....I didn't think it would do it but popped pretty quickly. I think this video will put anyone over the edge if they are thinking of buying one....enjoy!..ps if I look a little slow in the video, it was because I had hernia surgery 5 days before...couldn't stand being couped up on the couch anymore

    Welcome aboard!

Now run for your life before you get sucked in!!!

Ooops. Too late. You're toast already!

Nice vid. How did you manage that three way split? My stuff never splits that easily! Not the oak, anyway!

I keep a crowbar and a maul handy for persuading some of those "almost split" rounds. A 6 foot digging bar comes in handy, too.

    skmag,

    Great first post!!!

I have the 27 Ton version and agree with ya. They really are a sleeper that are more capable than commonly assumed.

Frozen Oak ain't much of a challenge, wait untill ya get into some big ugly rounds of Gnarly elm...THEN your little 22 ton will impress you MORE! LOL!!

On a side note, eric hit on a good point, and especialy concerning you just getting your "Zorch" fixed. Noodle those big rounds in half or quarters, and it's easier on the back, splitter, and the Kevlar/stainless steel screen the doc just sewed into ya.

Make sure to stick around and join in often!

    Stay safe!

    Welcome to AS

Your Huskee seems to do the job allright and the price is allright on those also. The only thing negitive I,ve heard with those is if you split wood in the horizontal pos. some wood will fall onto the motor.

thanks guys...I quartered all the other large pieces but I wanted to see if the splitter could split this piece in one shot...it took me a while to get log into position. I have not used the splitter in horizontal mode but the log would easily roll right onto the motor

I agree the Huskee 22 is a pretty good machine. I have had a couple of issues with mine though. In two years I've gone through two hydraulic hoses. The low pressure return line has turned to mush right at the clamp on the tank. I'm thinking it is a heat problem. Cheap and easy to replace. Also I found the wedge to be way too short. I split mostly beech, birch, and maple. It tends to be stringy and I was often left with a few very stubborn strands holding the wood together, too tough to pull apart so required flipping the piece over and running it again. Pretty much fixed that by welding an old ax head to the top of the wedge making it about 11" long rather than 7". Also built a simple wood table to hold the split pieces. Much better than letting them fall on the ground.

Welcome to AS! I think you'll find this site quite addicting! Both for the information and entertainment! This is especially true when you're looking to make a purchase of anything related to wood, chainsaw, woodburners, splitters etc. The people on this site are willing to help, very knowledgeable, objective and opinionated (in a good way ) which is helpful when looking to buy "larger toys." hee hee (yes, you will be wanting many things from reading/seeing what other guys are doing.) You're gonna laugh your arse off at some of these posts - it's great!

I too, have this same splitter and have been impressed by how well it splits and for the money is a pretty good value. I did go for the Briggs & Stratton 6.75 hp motor over the unbranded one and I am working on a table grate for it.
Stop throwin those monster pieces around or you'll be back to see the doc again.

Granted, I've only split 10 cord or so with my Huskee 22ton, but have yet to have a log ever come close to the engine. Maybe I'm using it incorrectly, but I don't see how a log could ever hit the engine, unless you threw it at it.

When splitting logs in the vertical mode I've started using a hookeroon to get the logs in position. With a little practice I've gotten pretty good at it and now rarely have to bend over any more.
