    What's the best PPE Helmet?

There's a dozen different helmets out there ranging from $30 to $60 for the Stihl model. Which one do you like?

I have the Pacific Kevlar helmet and love it. It's saved my skull a couple times and it is comfortable enough to wear all day. I got mine from Bailey's but it's about $150 with the hearing protection and face shield.

I'm a carpenter and I get mine from any construction supply or lumber yard company. The only difference is they cost 10 dollars and they abide by the same osha standards. They can also be fitted the face shields and hearing protection in wanted.

Not me but a fellow AS member has broken the mechanism that causes the ear protectors to spring out off of one's head, twice! Both under warranty but he is now done with Stihl brand and went with Peltor. He is a plastics molding guy and so he knows what should be used and what should not be used in molded plastic, and the Stihl ear pieces use the wrong plastic for that application. I have not broke mine yet, but I a super careful when I pull them off my ears.

That looks like a heck of a set up for 29.95. Money well spent.

Don't get a stihl helmet, the ear design is no good. Its snot tight even on my big head, if you turn you head they barley do any good.

Been logging for 16 years, did tree work for 4 years before that...bought a LOT of helmets..

I used that GRIPPO one for a little while, and the hearing protection was terrible. I used to wear ear plugs under those muffs. It's flimsy over-all.

Take my advice: Go buy the Stihl or a Husqvarna brand helmet. The difference is substantial. No need of ear plugs with them, and they are just a better fit and quality.

Your skull and ears are PRICELESS. Spend the $$.

    Put 'em on and try.

I have an Echo because it was the only one I could find in a local store that I liked the ear muff feel on.

Husky was definitely out on that factor for me.

I like the Peltors with the wire frame to hold the ear muffs, but I would've had to order one and my old helmet was ready to be replaced.

The real answer to "what's the best PPE?"

    The stuff you'll wear.

The Gripo might be rated at 30db, but it's no match for my 30db Peltor Ultimate 10 muffs. I really should get another set of Peltors and put their muffs on the Gripo wire frames.

Either that or use the Peltor gaskets and liners in the Gripo shells, but I think I tried that once and the Peltor gaskets don't fit on the Gripo housings.

    Stihl

I use the Stihl forestry helmet. Have only been using it the last month but it is great so far. As far as the above post about the ear pieces breaking. I have not had any problems with mine but like I said I've only used it for a month. Also they are coming out with a new helmet that looks just like the current one except for a little different ear protection set up. If I remember right it is coming out this spring. They are going to continue the current helmet as well. Good idea on the helmet. I received some research pointing out that 98% of chainsaw fatalities are caused by hits to the noggin from falling branches and such.

I got the husky chaps and helmet for christmas. I love them both. Being I have never wore anything like that before, I found the helmet comfortable. I still have to get used to the wire screen but I can't complain.
