    Linden tree

My son called and said his neighbor had cut down a linden tree, has anyone burned linden? Not trying to be a wood snob, but only have so much room to store wood and want to make the space count. Thanks

If there was one tree I was gonna pass on Basswood or Linden would be it...If it is not cut and split green it will rot before you get to use it...It does make good kindling or campfire wood if you have kids that like to play in the fire...

You also might want to ID the tree yourself, Linden is commonly mistaken for Ash and vice versa...

Linden or Basswood is all over around here, grows fast like sycamore. Not a hardwood.

Easy to tell from ash if the leaves are on it. I have one by the creek and it has gone from 10" diameter to 20" in 10 years!!!!

Good for shade, not much else.

You can tell your kids a million times not to play with fire, but until they get burn't they won't understand
A strong back and a weak mind have left me with the " if yer gonna be stupid, you better be tough" mentality

Thanks for the info....I checked it out and it was a linden. I'll save the room in the pile for some black locust that is standing dead.

Okay, at home now so I can tell the story...LOL

7 years ago when I was a punk ass kid, okay I was 30 and still had that killer instinct that we all used to have...I was probably one of the biggest anything you can do I can do better kinda guy...

I have always had a knack for being able to figure out and perform stupid tricks...You know the kinda that get most drunk people hurt...Well one night I was at a friends party and their college age kids had some friend over...One of them just could not sit still and shut his mouth...Was doing all kinda of stuff and was kinda bragging...Several people started pointing fingers at me and said I could do everything he was doing...

Well after a few more cocktails I jumped right in, doing back flips, twisting my arms around my head, patting the tummy and rubbing the head kinda crap...He got the bright idea to start walking the stones around the fire and I just sat down and watched...He gave me the old what you got sally feet...

I got up and walked around a couple of times then did the two step thru the fire... Everyone started laughing and making fun of him... Then he did it, walked right thru it and burnt the #### out of his feet...He played it off like it wasn't that bad, but my friend who is a fulltime fire fighter/paramedic told the tale the next day...He just flat said " I think you taught that boy a lesson he will never forget"....

Sorry for the hijack, but it is funny to watch stupid people...If you are going to do something at least understand what is going on before you jump in...

    Free camp wood Basswood

Ok so maybe a long shot here, but i saw this add on craiglist today, so came looking for info on basswood. The wood is not that far from my house ( 15 miles or so, and i can carry about a cord at a time).

But it does look like basswood is worth it. It would be for my OWB. Enter the long shot though, about people mistaking ash for basswood, is it possible from the pic on the add to tell if it really is basswood, or would it need to still have some of it leaves?

    Thanks

And probably drive right up to the stack for loading? Free? Already cut to size? You can haul a full cord a trip?

I can't tell from the pics other than that. If you need wood, this far into the season...hmmm...that's a toughie.....not. Go get it! Ya, time and gas money and..so what?

I'm lucky I can cut right on the property here, but if I couldn't and needed to scrounge wood, I'd be all over an ad like that...

Thanks Zogger -- That is what i was kinda thinking. From looking at the btu charts, basswood is ~14 million btu per cord, so that is still ~150 gallons of propane that i am not having to buy haha.

I have better wood available, but it is not an infiniteo supply and i have been too busy and it has been too hot the last little bit to get out and cut. So i think i will email the the guy and see what i can it, for 20 dollars a cord in gas money what can it hurt. right? hahah
