    My Earth Wood OWB Installation

Well I finally got my OWB installed. It's an Earthwood Woodsman 405 with 325k btu output. The furnace works awesome, I've been getting 12hr burn times. I load it in the morning around 0730 am and when i reload around 0800 pm there is still wood there. I went one day without reloading it for 18 hours and there was lots of coals still in there. I paid somebody to install it because my insurance company wanted a licensed contractor to do the work.

    trench dug by hand lol

    piipe going under the deck

pipe going in the house, kind of regretting not putting in shut off valves there in case of a leak in the house.

20 plate heat exchanger, unlimited amounts of almost boiling water at the faucep =P

16x16 120k btu heat exchanger in the duct.

Looks like a great system.....the only thing that would concern me is your heat exchanger in the duct is above your A-coil for the central air........could that freeze the water in your exchanger / split it?

well, the guy said he's never seen one freeze. Also there was no other place to stick it at. Anyways, i'll just drain it before the i start using the ac in the summer. The thing i have to worry about though is the hard water around here. I need to get me a water softener asap, wife is not too happy with all the purchases lately ( splitter, chains, tools, etc etc ) so i'm probably going to have to wait until tax refund

I don't think you have to worry about freezing the water in the hx. I would be more concerned with burning somebody with water from the fausett after coming out of the plate hx. I temped my water coming out of my little 10 plate hx for dhw at around 146. I wouldn't want that coming through the fausett.

Do you have a thermostatic mixing valve installed?

Other than that nice set up.

yeah i bought a honeywell mixing valve i haven't installed yet. Yeah i had to school everybody in the house on proper cold-hot water new mixing techniques to prevent 3rd degree burns.
I was thinking about putting up hot water warning signs above all faucet-showers in the house to prevent any liability if i ever have guests over

Can't quite tell from the picture are you running your dhw through the plate into the tank, then from the tank to the house are are you just running directly off the plate and bypassing the tank?

Gotcha, ya that is how i ran mine as well. I didn't want to try to go directly off the plate. (change in flow rate = change in temp and what not).

You shouldn't have any problems with the water being hot after sitting in the tank for a while either. In the morning the water is still over 120 before the mixing valve after sitting all night. (and i have a lot smaller plate hx so your water is prob going in to the tank hotter).

Been hoping someone starts a new thread on these boilers. I installed a Mountain Man 505 this fall and love it also. I did quite a few things to the furnace before I fired it. I factory ordered the double insulation, extra thick water jacket (from 1/8 jacket standard to 1/4) and then insulated my door. You can hold your hand on the door indefinately during full fire. Holds the heat great. I am currently getting no less than 24 hrs. between loads and most of the time up to 34 hrs. Last week it was a low of 18 at night and 30 during the day. Still waiting on that long cold spell to get a real good idea of how efficient it is. So far I believe I made a good choice. With this unit I am heating 2800 sq/ft above ground and 1400 sq. basement at 72 degrees. I posted some pics of the insulated door in another thread but if anyone wants me to repost them let me know. I havent hooked my hot water in yet because I use a tankless. I thought about using a sidearm just before the tankless so instead of it raising the water from 55 degrees to 120 it would only have to raise it about 20/ 30 degrees. I am sold on the Earth brand just because of the extra heavy duty design.

In the second to last pic is there three pex lines running into the boiler?
If so what is the third line?
