    If You Don't Like This...

    ...you don't like mashed potatoes.

Heatmor 200 CSS fired up 22April2012. Got a mixture of two 14" Ash logs (about 8" long) from tree job, 32" long 8" Wild Cherry log from the Plan-B Woodlot on a red hot bed of Oak Coals. My favorite blend...

    Frosty Tonight. House is 80.

Many a cold winter nite i have stood with the OWB door open, wind and snow blowing.
Like a cave man I have endured the worst of a winter snow storm thru the wee hours of morning while "tending" the fire. Coming into the house, snow covered and bleary eyed, the wife just shakes her head and wonders.
I can't explain it, my affinity for a blazing fire, while the worst of winter bears down on me.
A sniff of bourbon, maybe a cold half frozen bottle of ale, and no tin foil hat..what's not to like ?

In the future, when I think about getting an OWB, I will repeat that phrase.

You sound like me in the winter time! I love winter and I love being outside in it too! Especially when it is snowing like crazy out. Outside in snowstorms make for a fun time.

I can put my leftovers in the microwave, set the timer for 2 minutes go outside to feed the OWB and be back in time to hear the beeper go off. Then I am good for another 12-24 hours. Thats whats to like.

This could go on forever but

I can pull my hot leftovers out of the microwave, carry them downstairs while barefoot and in shorts, and eat them while I feed the firebox. Then I am good for another 6-12 hours (depending). In the morning I can pour a hot cup of coffee on my way to the basement shower and (sorry about the visual guys) stand naked sippin coffee as I feed the firebox.

I know you guys like your OWBs and if thats what works for ya, thats what ya should have. Its a personal preference thing and puttin my boots and coat on to feed the fire aint what I want but thats just me. Ifn I wanna hole-up in the house for three days during a blizzard, I can never even putting my pants on never even opening the house door just lookin out the window in my shirt sleeves if I choose. Now if I had to go out every day anyway to, say, tend livestock I might look at it different maybe.

    Spider,
I agree with you that what works for one guy doesn't always work for another guy. I was just trying to stand up for the OWB because your post came off pretty hard on them.

I have heated with wood both indoors and outdoors and I can easily say without any hesitation in my mind that I would NEVER go back to heating indoors. Lets face it, in all reality, I think most members in here would go stir crazy being inside all day on any day let alone 2-3 days in a row. I swear sometimes I just have to go outside and kick stuff around if I have been couped up indoors too long.

I want to respond ,but I'm not sure which direction to go....
1st off we have the indoor vs outdoor thing...then there's the Whitespider thing and then the VT.woodcutter thing...

....oh the voices are calling me....c'mon and get me...must be time to go fishing!

I've had both and the OWB suits me better and I'll never go back to an indoor. To each their own and that is what makes America great isn't it?

I'm single and have a day job so I can fill once a day and the house stays warm. No getting up in the middle of the night to reload. House stays at a constant temp which is nice too. Light the fire once in October and burn till around now. Weather like this I throw some in every 4-5 days for the hot water.(no electric bill on that for 5 months) Mine is in a building so the years wood is in place, dry(like me) and all the dirt/smoke is out of the house. Insurance man likes that too. All the bugs are away from the house and they are froze till they get a flame wake up call.

The biggest minus to an OWB is the wood usage. I know I use more but the pluses far exceed some more work. Have more than enough wood (over 180 cord) under roof and can't keep up with what falls or dies. I refuse to stack outside as it sits for a while with us. Did indoor for 25 years and had the boiler now for 7. Do what works for you.
