    Honda GC160 on splitter ?

I got a Honda GC160 from a pressure washer and I mounted it on my log splitter. Then I realized that it doesn't have a throttle control. It's permanently set at full throttle and a governor keeps it from over-revving. I read that it's not good for this engine to run with no load for very long (it sits there surging/bouncing off the governor).
Do you know if there's a replacement carb. that has a throttle, or can I modify this carb. to have a throttle, or will I just need to work faster and keep that ram moving ? LOL

if its hooked to the pump it will always have a load pumping fluid. Its not worth the time to try modify that carb or buy another when the same motor in my area is like 160.00 on sale. That motor will outlive alot of motors running wide open all day, if you keep the oil changed. Mine gets fired up for warmup than wide open till it runs out of gas, so whats the diff.

The pump doesn't pull enough on the engine to stop the surging unless I get into a tough log. It seems like I could run this engine at much lower revs so it would stop the annoying surging and also be much quieter.
I saw some replacement carbs. for @ $25 listed for this engine but they don't specify if they might have a throttle control. I think $25 would be worth it.

Here is one that appears to have the throttle:

    16100-Z0J-013 (BB61J B) OEM Honda ALL GC160 Engine CARBURETOR 16100-Z0J-003 NEW | eBay

Can't swear to it, but it looks to have a throttle on the top left of the carb.

    It has a governor...

The pressure washer had to have one. Now to figure out why it is surging

It is running lean, and surges to full throttle to correct the mixture if you load it enough then the surging goes away, more exactly the engine is using more carburetor to provide the power.
Okay, I am going to suggest that the problem is in the carburetor alright. First thing to do is be sure that there isn't something sucked in there, plugging things up. Next is to see if the float is adjusted close enough, perhaps it is a little low... The final possibility is that the carburetor is jetted a little on the lean side. Richen it up, and the surging will cease.

Honda engines are the best, anything else is a compromise.

    Good luck.

That looks promising. I wish it had more pics or a diagram. I'll run with that # and see what more I can dig up.
    Thanks.

If I get a new carb., with a throttle, then I won't even have to bother with this one.

I got a 160 Honda on my conveyor I looked at today it does have a throttle lever but all it does is put tension on a spring attached to the bottom of the gov rod. If I was you I would try to hook up a small low tension spring I'll try to take a pic tomorrow if you want?

A fixed throttle is fine for a splitter IMHO. I would bet your only problem is a plugged jet. I have a GC160 on a pressure washer and it will acted the same way after I left fuel in it over the winter. Pull the fuel bowl and the jet is in the tube that drops down into the center of the fuel bowl. I found that my jet was not drilled to the size stamped on the jet. I reamed it out with a drill bit in a pin vise and no more lean surge.

First of all the carb you have now has a throttle… they all do!

On small engines the “operator throttle control” (cable, lever, arm or whatever) does not hook to the carb throttle… it hooks to the governor... and the governor is what controls the throttle lever on the carb. Your governor is set to maximum RPM (maximum for the pressure washer pump specs) and all the new carburetors in the world ain’t gonna’ change that. The engine is surging because the governor spring is weak, or the engine is otherwise running improperly. (by-the-way, if ya’ watch the carb and linkage as the engine is surging you’ll see the carb throttle lever moving back and forth… ummmmmm, that would be the throttle lever you don’t think it has)

If you want to control the throttle you’re gonna’ need to either modify the existing governor set-up or replace it with a different style. If you want to stop the surging you’re gonna’ need to diagnose why it’s surging in the first place… it might be a carb problem, it might be a governor problem, it might be an internal engine problem, it might just be a simple adjustment. But one thing is for damn certain… installing a new carb ain’t gonna’ give you any more manual throttle control than you have now!

LOL. Thanks for setting me straight. I'll look into richening the jetting (as many of you said to) and then try to figure out if there is a way I can control the revs. Any advice on that aspect (modifying the governor, or whatever) will be appreciated.
90% of the time I don't need full power and I would love to have it a bit quieter most of the time, if possible.

Without some "hands-on", without being able to see it, I can't help you much.
