Thread: stainless steel flex pipe question

i cleaned the chimney last weekend and after having some difficulties with the flex pipe it now has a few small holes in it. maybe the size of a bb. my question is is the pipe junk now or is it still ok? also is their a good place to buy one online if it is junk?

are the holes from a mechanical source like a nail puncture or corrosion? if they are just holes that were poked through and they are as small as BBs you could use high temp RTV to patch them.
I got my flex pipe on E-bay which is always risky but I got it cheap and it was good stuff.

it got punctured cuse im an idiot basicly. the deal was is my fireplace had to be modified to get the pipe up the chimney. when i bought the stove i just stomped the pipe down until it would fit past all the weird angles and go up the chimney.

last weekend i took it out and rounded it out nice again. there are a few holes in the upper half of the pipe now.

on a positive note i ended up borrowing the plasma cutter from work and i modified the fireplace so the pipe is damn near a straight drop right into the stove. i figure if i ever want to use it as a fireplace again (highly unlikley) i can weld a plate back in place of the hole i cut. i looked inside everywhere throught the hole i cut and theres metal everywhere down there so everything should be good there. the flexpipe shoots straight to the chimney anyway but ifelt better knowing theres all metak back there. i also was able to push the insert all the way back in the fireplace, now since the pipe is a damn near straight drop so it looks alot nicer.also the door is further back on the tile away from the wood floor.

plasma cutter nice, I had to use an entire package of sawzall blades.

I'm guessing that only a few feet of the flex are ruined...cut off the ruined piece and add a section of rigid stainless to the top of the chimney to make up for it. What size flex pipe is it? I use a lot of 5" flex pipe working on truck and heavy equipment exhaust pipe. You can cut a small piece of exhaust pipe and splice the flex pipe together with band clamps, just cut out the bad section and splice it back together. That stainless steel flex pipe is very expensive stuff.
