    Changing hydraulic oil filter on splitter.

    Tried a search and got no results so thought I would ask. How often do y'all change your hyd. oil filter ? And how often do y'all change the hyd. oil? Thanks in advance . RAY

    A lot depends on the amount of time you use it/hours etc. if you have an hour meter on the engine go with that for 100 to two hundred ohours etc. those filter are not in bneed of changing as soon as engine oil filters.

    Spin on canisters have a lot of area for filtration where some filters are screens filter down to 50-30-20 micron and have restriction indicators etc.

    Its a lot like saying potatoe or potato or tomato tomatoe; but if you have a lot of heat build up and slower functions at normal hot temperatures maybe its time to dig out the filter strap and do the dirty deed with a new one-dont forget to coat the gasket with motor oil and if it is an upright filter upside down fill it with the oil you are using for hydraulic fluid to prevent cavitation.

    Some will say once a year , others will say every other year. I will only ask how often you change the hydraulic fluid and filter in your cars transmission?

    My BIL changes filter once a year no matter how much its run. I think he changed the oil once cause someone left it outside with lid off and rain got in. Made it milky. I would think a well designed splitter that never overheats the oil should never need to be changed.

    Splitter used about 15 to 20 hours a year.
    Engine oil yearly or at 25 hours.
    Hydraulic 10 micron filter at 50 hours.
    Hydraulic oil as long as it isn't milky looking and clean -about 10 years.

    you're asking

    If you care enough to put the energy into asking the question it will end up bothering you if you don't change it. In 10 years if the pump goes out you will think, "if only i'd changed the......" so just change it and sleep better at night.

    As long as you don't open your tank (get dirt in it) I would doub't that you need to do it more than every two or three years (unless you use your splitter every day. Hydraulic fluid is very resilient. It isn't like motor oil and doesn't do the same thing. However, it does get hot. It's one of those things that I think most guys over maintain. I bought a Timberwolf last year and put almost 200 hours on it (between me and my buddy who I bought it with). Not even considering it yet.

    I have not changed my filter since 1990 on my splitter.But also mine is an industrial setup that shows when the filter gets dirty and will go to bypass.It hardly has budged from the green area in all these years.It is a parker setup.And also I only use the cheap Walmart auto tranny fluid all these years also.Everything works fine and I split between 10-15 cord a year.

    Thanks for all the replies. I guess after only 60 hours and about 20 cords of wood I have nothing to worry about. So off I go to split some more. And by the way it's a bountiful morning, 53 degrees and plenty of sun.

    if it is new, I would change filter after about 10 or 20 hours, due to manfucaturing dirt and running in wear. Then once a year or two years. I mean for $10, not worth the chance of bypassing. It won't immediately die, but filtrtation and cool clean fluid free of water and air are the keys to long life in such a low pressure simple application.
