climbing gear question

alright guys. im new to this and looking for gear. i do not know the difference between L pads and T bads for climbers. what would be best for a beginner be? thanks

If you are going to teach yourself how to climb then do it close to the ground. Like no higher than 5 feet AGL. When you can throw a football and shoot baskets and play volleyball, and maybe eat your lunch at that height then you can move up to 10 feet.

I have a pair of buc pads on my spurs that replaced a worn out set of t-pads. They are nice but I think the rigid aluminum pads are better. Get a catalog from Wesspur and from Sherrillm both sponsors and great companies.

Really... you need a teacher.

i am only good for about three hours a day in a tree,but the regular t pads seem to treat me just fine by the end of the day,has anyone ever tried those wolf climbers they sell in baileys?they are pricey but look like they offer tons of support

i've beem looken at the wolfs to i see baileys sells some aluminum leg pads but they dont work with the aluminum spurs. i know for a fact i wont be in a tree for any longer then an hour or two.

They might not work with aluminum shaft spurs...do you have a luminum shaft spurs?

I found out the hard way there are at least 2 sizes of foam lined cast aluminum pads .. Somehow I got 1 set , the last set I used that was for someone with chicken legs and the curve point hit me fight on the point of my shin bone ...... I have no idea how well the Wolffe spurs work . I,ve only used Buckingham solid long gaffs . ( The standard for the camps in Southeast ) .... I,ve had and used Bashlins ,steel with the long tree gaffs . ( best so far ) .. I ,ve had Buckingham 's with the replacable tree gaff .. they were good . But I prefer the Klines with the replacable tree gaffs ... Mine have the L pads , which arn,t padded and they work very well and the sturrip is very comfortable ,using my Viberg 105T corks with the 2 instep corks removed ..... The Bashlins were probably the all around best ....... Very comfortable and secure .... .. If you like smashing your face into the tree use a set of Brooks for one tree ... I would wear a mouth piece from boxing tho .......

I have a pair, and they seem okay as they offer good support...although I had not done a lot of climbing, or did not do much research before I bought them. All that I had used before was an old pair of bashlin pole climbers, so the wolf claws are def. better than those, but after hearing all the guys on these forums talk, and after looking over other popular spurs I wish I would have maybe gotten a pair of bucklites with the aluminum pads, or why not spend a little more money on a pair of Geckos, because, if Gerald Beranek likes them, they must be good!

i do not spend much time climbing either,but i would like to get a new set of gaffs eventually and i might as well spend the money and get a good set,but then again that beanbag throwline and heavy duty come along they sell in baileys looks like a good option for some of my weekend warrior tree removals,others still need to be topped though,cant get around climbing those!

If at all possible try a few different setups before you buy. I have a friend that has the geckos and likes them and I know a lot of very good climbers on AS swear by them. I hate em. The don't hold in the tree well for me and they dig into my shins. I use buckingham steel spurs with the aluminum pads and pole spikes. They're great. Its kind of like boots I think, one brand and style is not going to fit well on everybody.

Aluminum spurs.. they have steel gafs if not mistaken.. is that correct.
