i went to home depot cause im cheap and saw powercare bar oil for $8.49 is that a little high or way cheap and how much do you buy name brand oil like stihl

I have consistently paid about 12.00/gallon of Stihl oil. I think it is worth it, a superior cain lube that stays on the bar long enough to do its job.

The cheapo Castrol stuff at Menards is running about 9 bucks a gallon around here. Not bad bar oil for the summer.
Husky winter weight is $9.99 at my local dealer. A steal!
Stihl std. was 12 Bucks last time I stopped in, and my dealer said prices went back down, but he was stuck with inventory he bought at higher prices.
The sludge sold at Tractor supply runs about 9 bucks locally and ain't bad if it's 90 degrees out and you don't mind the wait for the stuff to make it out of the jug.
Snag the good stuff when it's on sale.
Run the cheapo stuff if ya have to.
Bars aren't horribly expensive, and neither are chains, but bar oil costs add up quick if ya cut a LOT!.

I usually buy Poulan bar oil at $8 a gallon. I personally see no reason to spend $12 a gallon for Stihl or Husky bar oil.
All bar oil does is lubricate the bar and chain and all it usually does is fly off anyways, no sense in spending more for fancy bar oil in a bottle that says, "Stihl" or "Husqvarna" on it.

I sell husky bar oil for 11 a gallon, it is supposed to be sold for 15.95 a gallon!!

If you buy cheap bar oil it will certainly mostly "fly off"!
We're paying US$16.70 a gallon for stihl bar oil here in Australia but I wouldn't risk using anything less in the saw than brand name bar oil when cutting Aussie hardwood. I do use canola on my Auxiliary oiler on my mill but that doesn't need to go around corners so it can't get flung off.

Well any bar oil is better than none. I have customers that come in the store that use old used motor oil for bar oil. I don't get it either because these guys are using Stihl pro series saws. You think if they would spend that much on a saw they would use bar oil.

At a dealer in Denver three weeks ago, I bought two gallons of Stihl at $7.95 each. At a J. Deere dealer, they wanted a buck more for Echo, which I've found to be as good and may be the same stuff, looks like it is, anyway.

I have pretty much used everything available in my area. Hardware store oils, stihl, poulan,husky,echo,dolmar.
It all works the same, keeps the chain cool, lubricates and it all ends up on the ground.
I used this crap called chain pro. It would litterly run out of the saw when the temps got around 70*f.
Back in the day when I was a kid, guys used sae 30 thinned with STP. Worked well.
Factory fills are good oils but there are ones out there that are just as good at a better price.
I am currently using stihl cause I got a good price on it.

I'm surprised Gary hasn't jumped in here yet. :monkey: I pay 15$ for a single gallon of the Stihl bar oil. Then 8$ for the Durlex (SP?) from Bi-Mart. I mix them about 50/50. Works good for me.

$68 and change for a 20 liter jug of Stihl bio+, the 4 liter bottle runs $18 and change.

I know I am going to get some "slack" on this post but I DO run a 50/50 mix of Stihl and good clean motor oil and I have been using it for 3 years now and can HONESTLY say that I cannot see a damn bit of difference. Like one of the previous guys posted.... chains and bars are relatively cheap and you can easily spend that equivalent in expensive new Stihl (or other brand) oil. I have yet to wear out a bar and yet have saved $$$ in using the 50/50.
P.S. the old motor oil is strained through paint cone filters so it is as clean as it can get. I change my oil at 2000 miles so it is not all that dirty.

Been using Super Tech from Walmart for 4 yrs now no difference than any others Ive used. We pay $7.95 gal plus tax here in Mich, seems to work just fine.. Used to use Baileys Motion lotion.

Have you priced good bars lately? I don't know about you but $60.00 plus is not cheap, and a good Stihl chain are pricey also put the two together and it adds up(especially for bars & chains 24" plus in length). I think I will spend a little more for a decent bar oil and spare my bars and chains. Yeah I know you can find the cheap ones on Fleabay and second hand, but good bars are not that cheap.

I do as well...in one saw. The old (avatar) 65's oiler isn't quite up to the task, so that saw gets a mix that keeps it flowing.
I'm talking new motor oil here....

I concur. If you'd change it at say...1000 miles, your wife could still use it the fry baby...
You must have some hard, dusty wood over there, because I noticed the high output oil pump with the 1.15 mm stroke, rather than the 0.9 mm stroke standard pump, is listed as an AUS part. Does sand get in the wood as teh tree grows? I have never been there, and I figure there must be a good reason for having a special Australian oil pump.
