Not sure what this one is. No bark at all. Heavy logs. Splits fairly easy - two wacks w/ the monster maul. My best guess is a type of Oak but I have not seen the vivid orange coloring before.

Sure is nice looking wood...looks too pretty to burn! And how do you set a picture to show?

Hmmmm...

The inside looks almost like redwood, but the outer sure don't. Hard to tell from the pic, the inside kinda looks like Cedar almost, but again, the outside sure don't look right.

Its too dark for Red Oak, at least Red Oak I've seen.

Could be just about anything, that has mineral deposits in the heartwood, but I've never seen anything that vividly defined.

Looks like some kind of cedar to me.

I have a load of wood that looks identical to that - no idea what kind it is though! Burns well, not too fast... and as you said, splits easily. I've taken to splitting 10" logs just with a log grenade and a one-handed lump hammer!

Its not a softwood/evergreen - very little odor to the wood so that was of no help when I smelled it. I thought it was an oak till the first split but the log also does not have the rays in it that oak usually does.

The cedar i have cut seems light for its size, I vote for red oak or box elder
or as another thought, cherry?

As thejdman04 said, NOT box elder from my experience. I've cut hundreds of them and they have a VERY small pink core but 95% white wood. I'm not sure but doesn't most cedar not loose it's bark like that? The ones around here are kind of stringy and normally don't have a thick cambium area that falls off.

Willow isn't normally that red but splits like that and outer white looks right. It's heavy when not seasoned as it's mainly water. ;)

Cherry is a possibility as it looses bark. Bugs love it and normally start eating it quick. Don't know about oaks as haven't worked much with them. Interesting.

I've cut alot of cherry this season and this is nothing like it other than color. I need to go back to where I pulled it from to see if there is another log that might have some bark on it. This one had none. It had obviously been laying around for awhile. Don't have any other pics at the moment but I will take some closer ones this evening.

I have not knowingly cut any elm. I have heard here that it is a PITA to split. Is all of it hard to split? This split very easily.
