Rebuilt my Tilly HL yesterday...no "H" screw, just "L"....?????...
What's the deal with that?

What is the Tilly off of? All of the Tilly HL that I have worked on do have both screws but they can be in different locations. Like on the Pioneer 600 series you have the L screw on the left front of the carb and the H is on the right rear , it has a tee handle pin in it so that it can be adjusted with the saw running without a tool. A lot of the older saws were made to be adjusted this way.

Hello Disston
I have sent the Pioneer650 IPL's your way hope this helps you out
Lawrence

Thanks for sending me the IPLS! I really appreciate that. An opportunity came up for me purchase what appears to be a complete set of Mculloch IPLS and service manuals. So I certainly hope I can help others out in the same fashion.

What do you guys recommend for oil

Any issue running Tanaka 2 cycle oil (50:1) in my old Pioneer 650.

50:1 ratio of any good oil should be ok, I personally run 40:1 mix in all of my vintage saws starting with saws made in 1948 up to 1966. All of them called for a heavier mix back in their time but the oil back then was not what it is today, did not even burn clean and left a lot of carbon in the muffler and on the piston crown. My rebuilt Pioneer 600 series saws stay so clean in the muffler and cylinder running 40:1 mix that it is hard to tell they are even run with 20-30 tanks of gas through them. The carb may have to be set slightly different than the factory specs but I just set mine to work the best, good steady idle and maximum power in the cut. One of my 600 `s will now idle down to 980 RPM on a good day, years ago I could not get one to idle below 1300 RPM, all I can think of is that the oil now burns cleanly along with the gasoline and makes more power than the mixes of old.

Jerry: After rebuilding my carb, cleaning out the tank, new pickup/fuel line installedon my RA, does the fuel bowl, pickup line need to be primed?

Well after I sold that P26 that I had for a short while, I was kind of just hanging around this thread. :D

Here is my latest acquisition. It is a 620, and it looks like a perfect candidate for a restoration. There are a few saws in the way right now, but I am definitely looking forward to getting this beauty looking new again.

If anyone has any documentation on the 620 (or one of its 6xx relatives), I am officially begging for a copy of an IPL and also a Service Manual! :D

Thanks

Now that I've been looking at Pioneerguy600 and gmax's 620 pics, my top cover is different.

Is there a model number anywhere on that saw?

What top cover is that?

hmmmm

You don't need to prime the fuel bowl
or any lines. Just give it a few drops of
gas mix in the carb throat hold throttle
open and when it fires it will pick up it's
gas. Might have to do it a couple times.

Chris and his Pioneer

Hello Chris
There should be a model number on the front of the flywheel cover. If I am right there is usually 2 metal tags.Jerry will let you know exactly what you have there you.he is a 600 series Guru for sure.Once you find out what you have there'm sure I have some info I can scan for you.

NHtech & The Poulan

I think propliner or pioneerguy600 could fill you in on the Poulan. They are always checking in so hang in there. That is a nice saw you have there. Is it a new addition?

Unfortunately, that tag is missing on this saw. Looks like my restore will not be a total one since I do not have a serial number to put on a new tag.

Oh well, I will restore whatever I can and will search for a blank tag (or make my own) .... I will get this as close as I can to "as new" condition.

... I am still quite interested in what Jerry has to say about that top cover.

That Poulan Pro 655 is basically a Pioneer P60/61/62 rebadged as a Poulan after Electrolux acquired Pioneer / Partner and Poulan in the early 1980s. Designs from all three brands were either directly rebadged and sold as is (like this 655) or mixed and matched somewhat but under the Poulan name. Personally I just wish they would have let the Poulan name die along with the other two rather than sully it with the crap they call Poulan "Pro" these days.

Chris - that saw looks like it came out of the paint booth at the sawmill I worked at. We used to call it Smurf City since everything and everyone inside and around it was a nice royal blue color.

Gday Chris, It looks like you have a 650, the fuel cap and the top cover looks different to the 620 ones, it will look nice repainted in the original color,
is it running ok?.

I picked up another 620, (not running) the screen in the carby was blocked, the fuel filter in the tank was missing the mesh, these Pioneers are one of the easiest chainsaws to work on, took half an hour to fix.

Now it starts & runs very well,
