After finishing a small spruce for one guy in town I drove by to investigate chain saw noise. Seems a neighbor on the other side of the block was having a tree service guy take a couple of large ash trees down; climbing and swinging and taking it from the top down. I asked if they needed any help with cutting up the big stuff and they thought they could handle it.

Since it was so close, I carried my 840 with 36" bar down "just in case". There were a couple of large logs already on the ground so they agreed to let me cut one up just for exercise. Since there was a lot of smaller limbs down and plenty of hands but few saws, I walked back home to get my 7-10 (see McCulloch 7-10 thread for more details if you'd like). I cut a few limbs and handed the saw to Marv who'd been cutting with his 290 Stihl outfit with a 20" bar. He made about 4 cuts then with a big grin on his face handed it back and asked "Is is the chain or the power?". Both.

Later on the tree guy work working on a large limb from the ropes when his 2101 Husqvarna took a dump. He wondered if he could use the 7-10 to finish the sky work, sure why not. When he came to the ground, again a big grin, he suggest the 7-10 could handle a bigger bar (it's still fit with the 16" bar).

Well, since his bit Husky wasn't going to be doing any more cutting this day, they thought I could go ahead with the 840 and knock down the remaining trunks. Since they were very concerned about dropping them on the street, they strung a rope to allow them to pull them the other way against the lean.

With the trunks on the ground, my older son showed up and I sent him home to bring back one of my SP125's to finish the stumps since it would be handier than the 840. Apparently he didn't understand which saw I wanted (I didn't shut the 840 off for fear it might not restart) and carried over the McCulloch 55 that arrived this week (e-Bay purchase, honestly all I did was put gas in it and install the bar and 9/16" pitch chain). Well, it was already here so I used it to cut up another of the trunks, what a hoot!

He did go back to get the SP125 and we finished up the big stuff in pretty short order. A great day!

More McCulloch stuff

Working the stumps down with the SP125. When it was all over I let the tree guy cut a few round with the SP125. He thought is was lighter than his 2101 and everyone agreed his had a really good sound.

This was the first time my older son (Jeff) ran the 7-10, he too was grinning and said he has a new favorite saw, just like dear ol' Dad.

I will go into some detail on the chaps in another thread, another day.

Last note, I got a new camera for Father's Day, seems to take better pictures. If I'd known how to use it the day I got it I could have taken a shot of a tornado as my very first photo with it; it was clear on the screen but I didn't push the button down far enough to take the photo.

The 7-10 looks so cute sitting there next to the Mama and Papa saws.

It's cool the tree guy let you help him, probably a small outfit without tons of backup saws and gear. How did the ole 55 run?

A lot of people underestimate the old Macs as being old, heavy and slow junk, but in the big wood there's no substitute.

Hey Mark, that's a boat load of yella saws...seems you had a blast and the other guys were grinning as well. If you can put them oldies in wood means real fun.

Hey Mark looks like a good time. Love the look of the old SP doing it's thing. My neighbor came over yesterday and asked if I would cut up a couple of old walnut logs that have been on the ground for a couple of years. It will be the perfect chance to get my SP into it's first big wood, well sort of big.

For those who have not be fortunate enough to see Marks shop, ya have to wear sunglasses cause of all the glare from yellow saws. It's quite a collection, and he really knows his stuff. JR

Compensation? I got to run the big saws and help a neighbor out, that's enough. The first project for the day consisted of cutting down and cutting up a small (16" at the base) spruce tree. He asked how much when we were finished, I suggested $10 for gas (again a neighbor I could help) and he paid me $50. O.K. we did use my truck to make two trips to the brush dump but it's only a 1/2 mile away.

How does the SP125 like working close to the ground? The muffler is aimed right into the earth, so there is now bit of a scorched earth trench around base. Believe it or not I stayed out of the dirt, just cut some grass off a little below putting green height.

Mark, truly an awesome photo set! I really like seeing that old iron performing in the way it was intended. Of course, if had been me, there would have been a little red and black mixed in.;)

Hey Mark

I was going to use the SP to cut up a big Walnut today, and the chain more or less got stuck in the bar after just a few minutes. I had taken the bar off and made sure that the oiler was working a while back. Had plenty of bar oil and even dribbled a bit on the chain before starting. Is this something that can be fixed with a dressing of the bar, or would it be best to just get a new bar and chain? The chain is pretty well depreciated, it's a full skip, but I don't know chain well enough to identify further. Probably best to just get both new. If I do would you recommend 36 with full comp chain, or would 30 be better with full comp? The saw runs good though. JR
