I just fixed a Stihl 024 AV that a Stihl dealer's mechanic told the owner that it was "running rich" and that's why it was having trouble idling and would shut down at rest. Dealer mechanic said the carb needed a rebuild or a whole new carb. Repairs would cost between $80 and $150. The owner gave it to me and I discovered that the carb's low-speed set screw was closed tight. I opened that up 3/4 turn and the saw started and ran perfectly.

Any comments?

Friend took his 20 year old 394 into the dealer and said it was not worth repairing. He gave it to me and I installed a new piston, ran great, cylinder was clean. Saw was in nice condition. I sold it back to him for cost of piston. Nice score.

Spike60 has the 50cc kits in stock $105.00 shipped. Just fyi for anyone needing one.

I would have looked into getting the kit from Spike, but I'm not sure how the process would work being the town DPW and paying with a voucher and all. Plus, the boss is partial to dealing with GKS just a few miles down the road.

So many good suppliers out there, no matter who you spend your money with, you always feel bad for not spending it with another.

On my bench is a 1959 Mac 1-50. A $5.00 yardsale saw that ran and cut when purchased but of course the recoil spring was patched in there and broke again so its time for a new one. 170 psi compression. Ill buy a new 28" bar and have the oil journal matched and drilled and keep it for a back up to my Homelite 925.

Good fternoon to you too from an overcast 51° day in Springfield Oregon.
Well I'm just getting ready to go find some husky sized bar studs that thread into my ms460. But first I have to finish rebuilding a carb on a McCulloch 3200...woohoo, then onto an ms170 oil hose, then to finish the day off with this 359 that wants ported...View attachment 484140

Hopefully when it shows up it has a smaller bar on it.
I have a 359 thats almost ready for a rebuild. What would you suggest for a good aftermarket brand piston, jug and such?

Can't ever fault anyone for buying local, it is important to keep those people In business, especially when the treat you well. My local dealer dnt keep any P&C kits in stock, but I too try to buy there first, as you can tell from my 550xp deal, she treats me very well. I used to buy from her husband until he passed, I am glad she kept the business going, and she does all the work on the saws now too, the Amish community here are great people to do business with fair and honest.

I would never put an aftermarket piston or cylinder on one of these models.
The 357xp cylinder kit is only $200 for the auto decomp version which is easy to convert to regular decomp. I'm not sure if this kit is included in the price drop Husqvarna started in January, but if so then even better.

Interesting. So why did the owner tell me that the dealer mechanic said it was running rich? Sometimes you just plain do not know who to believe.
I remember now, mine was a customer saw, a 290 that he couldn't get started. I don't know who messed his saw up but all it needed was to turn the screws out. He picked up his saw and that's the last I heard from him. I guess it's possible that the guy who talked to you didn't know what he was talking about or he heard it from someone else who didn't know. A lot of people don't know anything about a chainsaw, met a couple of them today.
