Haven't been on here in a long time. Moved across the state, no room at the new place to cut/store wood. Ah, city life.

I picked up this poor little 028 Super at the junkyard the other day. To my amazement, it runs even with a gusher of fuel shooting out the side of the carb. It's missing the air filter, filter cover and bar cover. AV mounts are toast, the pull cord is pretty tired and the chain brake is non-op. All that probably isn't too too bad, but the shmoo on the is pretty sketchy. It's not gasket maker, it's hard like 5 minute epoxy. I'm assuming this has something to do with why the chain brake isn't working.

I've been doing a bit of wood carving, so I'd like to cobble a saw together. Hewing shapes down with an axe is becoming pretty tiresome. So what do y'all think? Try and get this little guy going or bust it for parts and look for a Husky basket case? :drinkingcoffee:

Did a little more digging, it is indeed melted plastic from the oil pump gear. After digging a decades worth of burn oily sawdust out from under the chainbracha cover, the chain brake works fine. The clutch is covered in melted plastic though. Looking more like a parts saw.IMG_20180325_115824.jpg IMG_20180325_115655.jpg

Pull that drum off and check bearing, it looks toasted too. Post some pics with drum off also.

I’d fix it cheapish and get another 30 years out of her. Parts can be found here and eBay,just gotta dig a bit.

A few more shots of what's going on. Took the drum off, bunch of rollers. So...bearing failure threw off the center of the sprocket/drum and chewed/melted the oil pump gear?

I also took the jug off to look at the piston and cylinder. Some scoring (I don't know how much is too much) and some very small pock marks in the cylinder (not sure if y'all can really see it in the picture).

Been shopping around on craigslist to weigh how much effort I want to put into this saw. Saws are pricey around here and there's not a lot of selection compared to the mountains.

Looks like bearing got hot(seized, rust?) melted then started in on oil gear. Easy fix.

Cylinder looks ok to me. Do any of the marks catch a finger nail? If no, it’s fine. Scotch brite it and run it.

Ok, so it just needs:

A carb kit
Bar cover
Chain brake cover
Oil pump gear
Oil pump seals (burnt up)
Jug seals (now that I've removed it)
Drum/sprocket
Air filter
Air filter plastic
AV rubber...probably other rubber

Did I forget anything? Might have jumped the gun on this one...

I might have a used, but useable filter. Motobond and a beer can will make a gasket for jug. Or just gasket delete if piston don’t hit squish band. eBay has a oil pump,drum/rim and all gears you need for ~$25. Bearing is a few bucks more.

^Honestly I didn't even think about just making it work with whatever I can. I'm liking this idea.

Does anyone know off hand if these run the same carb as an 026?
