My ms170 came with a 16” bar with the 3/8 .043 chain!
I took HarleyT’s suggestion and put a 14” bar with the little thicker 3/8 .050 gauge chain!
It cuts great with it!
I’ve only cut about two good truck loads with it, since I switched, mainly Hickory, but cuts very well! (BUT: I did put the ms250 carb on the 170 so it would have a fully adjustable carb on it, plus a muffler mod)
I haven’t cut long enough with it to tell the overall advantage of that chain over the .043, but it pulls the .050 no problem!
Another tip about the ms170, is that the ms210-ms250 “side chain tensioner” will fit perfectly in the 170, making it easier to tighten or loosen the chain!

can I use 325 on this stock bar.... I dont want to buy another bar..
can I squeeze .050 into a .043 groove???
You want the bar with the correct groove width so that the chain is not too tight or too loose! (Wobbly)
BUT you can find combos of bar and chain for $20 and under!
I think I got the 14” bar and .050 chain at TSC for $19 something?!
If I can find it I’ll post the link to some other brands that someone posted on another thread about this!

No 0.325 is different sprocket pitch than 3/8 picco or normal 3/8 (which are themselves different). And most 0.325 is 0.063 groove so would not fit bar groove either.

Both pitch on chain/sprockets need to match, as well as bar groove width.

I am happy with 3/8 pico micro semi chisel non safety chain in 043 on my 180s at 16", they work well, easy to sharpen too.
I like the 61pmm3 chain that I assume the guy in post 1 does not like. Perhaps he is using brand x not Stihl. It is reduced kickback green chain used on green 7 tooth nosed bars. It has bumper drive links (at least in this market USA) and seems called safety chain by most folks.
