Sounds like Tar Spot which is only cosmetic and doesnt affect the health of the tree. If you want to treat it , remove all fallen leaves and discard. Prune the crown of the tree if it is really dense to allow more air circulation. In the spring apply Dithane or a Copper spray like COCS at 14 day intervals beginning at budbreak. Do this three times . John
