Well, I gave up my tree business when I finally got hired by the railroad. (CN)

I've been working out of town for almost 6 months straight with very little time at home so no time to mill up any wood.

Finally got a chance to change that today.

Well, actually started Friday after work and piddled some Saturday setting stuff up but did the actual milling today.

Milled up a 6' long red oak log that was about 22" diameter. Cut 2 slabs 2.25" thick and the rest at 2" thick.

Oh, finally have a place to store a little bit of the wood I cut too.

I've got plenty more to do and actually have a little time in the next few weeks to do it! More to come!

Man that is some really red oak! very nice....as well as a really smooth finish on those boards....What kind of chain are you using?

Nice pics,job and storage! Thanks.
Looking forward to the next tree!

I don't really remember what kind of chain. It is ripping chain and I got it from Baileys so it's probably Woodland Pro. Anyways, 10° angle and it does cut nice and smooth.

Scott,

Nice pile of wood you milled there. I have been using the Woodland Pro chain and it does mill pretty smooth. Also like your work container-shop. I've been thinking about getting one of those up at my place here in CA. Are they very expensive?

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Don't tell anyone how versatile the RC -30 is....

You apparently have a litter mate to my little Pedro.

I have root rake with Curved bottoms teeth, and I can get two of those in it.

New, they are as much as $5,000.

You can get them in nice, used shape (read, weather proof) for about $2,000.

Think I paid $2,200 including delivery. Mine is 40' long and is the slightly taller one. (by about a foot)

The RC30 is an amazing little machine. VERY easy to use and goes places most skid steers won't. It's a little limited on what it can pick up though. With my weight set on the back, I can lift about 1,200 lbs. Not bad though when you consider that the whole machine is only just over 3,000 lbs. Oh, the green tracks (turf tracks) are as advertised. Leaves VERY little to no marks on the grass.

Pretty boards, I see some blue in there, watch out for the steel if you have more pieces of that log. I have a big Red Oak to drop for my BIL, most will be firewood, but I'm keeping 2 7' logs off the bottom for some slab benches. Good to see you back and thanks for posting up the pics, Joe.

I hear you on the metal. I think that was the only log I saved from that tree. I had another beautiful red oak that was just full of metal. It was so bad that I ended up not even using it for firewood and just threw the whole stinkin thing on the burn pile because I was tired of killing chains. Shame, it was very pretty wood.

I learned this by a bad experience... Be very careful drying oak in an enclosed area. I did about 1250 bf. in my steel barn. EVERYTHING with exposed metal was corroded by the acid/fumes, even "stainless" steels. This sucked.

I'll keep that in mind. I do plan on cutting an attic fan in the roof to vent it.

Do the initial drying outside, then bring it in. I had a bunch of corrosion too when I dried about 200bft of oak in my garage. Had to travel that next week, so I just stacked it and had my son empty the dehumidifier every night when he got home from school. Was with another 200 some odd bft of walnut in the same stack.

Got one vent cut in the container on the door today and bought an attic, roof mount vent fan. I'll cut it in tomorrow.
