    Surgery ? (No womenfolk allowed)

Guess that probably got all the women in here huh?? lol

Kinda embarrasing (maybe it shouldn't be?) but I've been dealing with a hernia the last few years...not sure what kind you call it...down low into my sack. Its getting to the point that I'm gunna have to do something about it tho. I dont have any insurance so I have to save my money before I can have any surgery - in fact, I don't even have a doctor so I have to save up just to go find somebody to talk to about it. I was just wondering if any of you guys that have had hernia surgery could give me an idea of what it might cost??

And also how long it put you on the sidelines?? I not only have to save up the money...I also have to pick a time of year when I'm not too busy - so it sure won't be anytime soon. I'd just keep putting it off but its getting a little bit hard to put up with most days. I hate to sound like a wuss but I just don't think I can put up with it many more years.

    Thank you

Are you a veteran by chance? If you are, go to the nearest VA facility and they will give you a hand.It doesnt have to be service connected, and you dont have to be disabled or anything. They accept payment on a sliding scale, and often the serivices are free.

You shouldn't feel embarressed about it because they can happen to anybody.

I had one about 12 years ago but it was in a different place and I don't remember how much it cost because at the time I had good insurance. If you tell them that you don't have insurance and that you'll pay cash they'll probably give you a big discount.

I was down about 6 weeks because I had the cut and patch surgery but if I had the laparoscopic surgery the recovery time would have been a lot less. I don't know how long your recovery time would be since it's in a different area. I do know that it hurt a lot and for the first few days it was bad.

If you can opt for the laparoscopic surgery but it may be a lot more expensive.

Not a vet so can't do the VA.

I figured I could get a cash discount danrclem, I was just hoping to get a general idea of how much it'll be. I'll check into the laprascopic thing - maybe Miss Nancy and the Big O will take care of me so I can get the very best and the rest of you guys can pay for it for me. lol

Thanks for the replies. Glad nobody asked for pics...like they do on the chainsaw board: "Without pics it didn't happen" lol

You folks all have a great day!!!

Had one repaired in 2000. My insurance paid something like $4800. Day surgery, in at 0600, out by 1400 the same day. Went home and to bed. Got a slight infection and had to return to the emergency room. Up and around in two or three days. Back to work in a week. But, I did not have a physically demanding job. Also, you are going to know after the repair when you are pushing the repair.

I'm going on the butcher's block for a hernia next week. 100% covered by our national healthcare plan.

I'll be off work for at least a few weeks. As a groundman, I lift all day long. So I can't rush back in and risk tearing things open.

Best o' luck to ya, fella. I feel your pain.

I had one of those lower hernias done a few years ago, Don't remember the cost but i'm sure it would be higher now. The operation is a piece of cake. You just can't lift nothing for a while. Not much pain involved as i remember. i hope you get the money thing worked out and get it done. You are another living example of why our health care sucks. Mines getting to the point where it's too expensive. You take care and get it done.

Are there any Amish settlments in your area? If there is, then go and talk to them to find out where they get their health care. They don't have any insurance and they don't have a lot of money so they find the most economical places to get things done.

My Amish neighbors (we live in central Michigan) have just returned from Sylvania Ohio to have hernia operations done on 2 of their children. The cost was around $2000 each. There is a clinic there that serves low income people without insurance at afordable rates.

Perhaps there is something similar near you somewhere.

You might look at going to Thailand or India. Both countries have up to date medical care for a fraction of what we pay. 60 minutes has done many segments on it. About 20-30% of what it would cost here, including the travel and post OP care. I was running heavy equipment when I had mine done and kicked back for three weeks. I took it easy for a couple of months. A friend didn't want to take much time off and had his done three times before he sat on his butt for a while. Good luck!
