Stumper, I don't know exactly what it is, it has the slightest bit of rifling but I would love to know more about it.

All I know is, its worth a lot more than $250 in the condition that weapon is in.
And that that aint no little .38special its at LEAST a .50 caliber or larger.
Anyways, very nice piece of history.
Anyone know what an original AC/DC back in black record in the original cover with some wear from handling is worth? I'm not talking about 8track tapes, I mean the vinyl record about 14-16" around.
Oldsaw, That looks like a dime that Mark has next to the bore. A dime is .69 so It looks like over 70 calibre. If it were a smoothbore I would think it was a Punt gun-a Swiveling shotgun intended for bagging ducks by the flock. The bore is small for that. Plus it is rifled. Plus it has fairly substancial sights. Plus Mark says it is Naval.. It is french so it can be very odd and fit perfectly into the French arms tradition. I bet it didn't do much except look intimidating on a rowboat. Still a very sweet piece!![]()

That dime is a quarter and would drop to the breech. The bore's an inch if it's a millimeter.
It looks like a breech-loader; am I seeing that right?
Glen
Yes it's a breach loader, but the the rifliing is just scraped in there, the barrel is steel. I don't know if it is a punt gun or not. Personally I don't think it since the market hunters would have bigger barrels since they like to load nuts, bolt, nails in the barrels for the ducks.
I'll try tp shoot it today and get back to you all![]()

Glen,I went back and looked at the pic. Right you are. I stand corrected.
4 ,6 and 8 gauges were all made as Punt guns-as well as 2s and a few 1s. I don't doubt that a lot of punts were abused with weird loadings of debris but the pros who bought them originally probably stuck to measured loads of lead shot. Light rifling could be useful to increase scatter for close flock shooting but I suspect that it is indeed military.-probably had loadings of solid projectiles and grape. I bet a load of buckshot from that at 50 yards did a lot toward clearing a deck!
