I did my time in the service, but have always had trouble considering myself a "veteran" in the sense of the word. I distinctly remember marching in a memorial parade alongside WWII veterans, and being quite humbled by these men. Having only ever served in peace time, and never having to actually put myself in a situation like so many others have, I can't equate my service with those who have.
That's not to dimish in any way those who serve in peace, because that would be wrong of me - they are every bit deserving of respect - it's just a feeling I could never personally shake.
Canadian Vet here served 1977-2003, but will pause today to remember my American Uncle, Donald Damon Reed 1933-2008 who served in the USN aboard the USS Macon as a storesman 1955-1958. Miss fishing with him!
Also my Uncle's brother Richard F Little (not a blood relative) who served in the USAF as a Canadian volunteer, ca 1955-1980, including two tours in Vietnam. He was an interesting man to talk to if you could understand his Alabama drawl, completely out of line with his origins (his kids were even more difficult to comprehend). Believe he retired to Deatsville.
Pipehead, share your sentiments......there are vets and there are VETS! I consider myself to be in the former group!
Said this all elsewhere, but I salute those men and women that served and serve in the US Armed Forces, helping to make the world a better place for us all. And for those that paid the ultimate sacrifice, my humble thanks and Godspeed.

Miss being around the best people in the world, truly a brotherhood regardless of the branch of service.
As I walked the graves this morning, it amazed my children that so many of our relatives have served and died in countries like France, Germany, Korea, Vietnam and even in the fields of Tennessee during our own countries struggle for identity. I sure just like the others that posted most served because they love this country, its freedoms and it's people.
