I hear a lot of good about Rock River Arms... If I were to buy an AR, it'd be from them.

Are you talkin buying full auto, i have two M-16a1's, One carbine and one rifle, Have several ar's. The class three guns are terribly expensive now but are a blast to shoot and burn some ammo quick. Either one you buy will be fun to shoot.

I have an AR-15 from DPMS, with an M4 upper, have about 3500 rounds through it with no problems.
Spikes Tactical, Palmetto State armory, Rock River Arms, and Larue Tactical are really nice units. The DPMS are good units so far, but they just merged with Bushmaster and I can't attest to the latest models. Bushmaster is to AR as Wildthings are to Chainsaws. Its kinda a gamble with the Bushmaster on whether they will work well or not.
Semi-auto. To keep things legal
We sold a Rock Island for a friend, unfortunately Dad didnt want one then... Nice simple M4 with collapsable stock, 3 30 rounders, a drum, and a case full of ammo.
Also missed out on a nice stainless Colt.
Looked at a few kits, but you still gonna tie up about 600$ in a kit gun buying a decent lower.

Thanks XDMP. Went to my cop buddies house the other day. He showed us 2 that he built, and his issued Bushmaster. Seemed to feel alright, and I guess the department trusts them.

Here is a good thread...lenghty, but worth skimming
http://forums.officer.com/showthread...y-an-AR-15-huh
If you want to build, Palmetto state armory has a stripped lower on sale right now for 49 bucks plus 11% fed tax, then add your local FFL fee (15 to 25 dollars) parts kits can be had for under 100 bucks, then a stock from magpul in the 125 to 250 range. Palmetto also has uppers starting @ 400 for a 5.56/.223 with M4 feeds ramps. If you want a good feeding unit, M4 feed ramps are the way to go.
You can build a really nice unit for 800-1000. I have built 6 so far for friends. But its just like any other addiction, before you know it you have 3 of them and the origional budget of 800 ends up being 1300 because you feel a need for big, new, shiny stuff...lol
Oh, and as far as optics, unless you are heading into war, there is no need for the 1000 dollar EOTech or Aimpoint Acog's. I have a Lucid HD7 reddot on mine that works really really well @ 300 dollars, but primary arms and tru glo make some decent stuff for under 100. Again, not pro quality and would fall under a homeowner chainsaw, but definitly get your money's worth while saving up for more big, new, shiny stuff......lol
Here is my latest creation....
DPMS multi cal. lower
DPMS M4 upper with 16" SS bull barrel, rechambered for 5.56
Magpul UBR stock
CAA pistol grip
Magpul AFG2 foregrip custom railed by yours truly
UTG bi-pod
Lucid HD7 optic on a Millet long riser mount (saving room for a magnifier)
Have just over 1300 in it (the stock was 250, and could have gone much cheaper by using MOE stuff, and about 150 into making it 100% ambidexterous)
Oh, and a small added cost of 200 dollars in Pmags (I have 20 30rnders, you never know when the zombie apocolypse is going to hit and will need 600 rounds locked and loaded in mags ready to go
Another 200 for a mag and mount and I will call her done (I think...lol)
Thanks! Green rep headed your way soon as I can.
I dont think this one will be getting a scope. There are quite a few others here with scopes on them. Dad said he wanted more of a home defense gun?
But I believe I will start collecting parts to build me one as wellSomething about that EBG disease.

WOOT....green rep!!!
There is a differance between scopes and reddot's and then there are scoped reddots...lol all considered optics.
For home defense, a good 1x reddot with a 2x-5x MOA dot is plenty and IMHO better than open sights. You can use them with both eyes open, put the red dot on your target and fire away. Nice quick and simple.
You are correctt that a scoped AR is not the best for AR. Anything with more than 2x magnification is not as good for CQ work (25yds and closer). My lucid is good from muzzle to bout 100 yds, I plan to add a flip to side mount variable magnifier so I can really reach out and touch something.......
Good Luck, and feel free to pm me for any help.
I run Bushmaster but I don't think you will be disappointed with any of them, but I would think an AR would be beyond an entry level gun.

I will add Bushmaster has made some good AR's but I have also seen a lot of Bushmasters that don't feed well, amd tend to jam up.
Sometimes just taking them down and polishing burrs off with emerycloth is all they need.
If you find a 6-7 hundred dollar bushy, its worth it for what you get. But another 2-3 hundred spent is also worth it, plus if you build from scratch, you get the pride of knowing how it all works and can standup and say "yeah, I built that"
JRR, are you talking about the differences in the M4, AR, and M16? Or just entry level period?
The main goal was not to spend 1000$ on the first one... We are no strangers to guns. Just slacked off to buy saws, not were back to guns and ammo.
