    Today's tree

I bought me one of those friction devices and decided to try it out on one of my own trees before tackling the neighbors tree for which I bought it. I had a (mostly) dead limb on a huge sycamore that was hanging over the street, so I figured it was time. At the highest point I was 75 feet up. I tied the limb off in two places, and it all came down beautifully. Did another smaller limb higher up as well. All went well, and my worried wife is glad I'm back on the ground again. The other tree I'll be doing is a tulip tree, fairly big, but it's a removal. The only thing that really worries me is cutting the top off. There are other trees nearby which I might be able to tie onto. Not quite sure how I'll be tackling that one yet. Here are the pics:

Here's my father-in-law untying my ropes from the limb.

The best action shot. All the others pics were mostly close-ups of my butt. (Ljute would have liked those, eh? )

    Here's a good one!

The Unicender from Rock Exotica. Love that thing. It ascends and descends without having to remove it from the rope. Very safe and easy to use.

Oh, and I coupled that with a foot ascender as well.

Nice going there Josh, but I have to give you a hard time about one thing. Is it just me, or do I see you up in that tree without a helmet??

Bad bad boy. Get your oldest to whack you with a 2x4 when you get home tonight. No helmet, no climbing.

Sorry, but the only helmet I have is a big one with the face shield and ear flaps and all that. I didn't want to lug all that up there, especially since most of the work was without the saw. I do intend to get a decent helmet, though! Thanks for the scolding. I need a few more carbiners as well, so perhaps it's a time to place another order at Baileys.

kudos Josh!!! but hell ya get some kind of hard hat on yer melon!! I have been knocked out 2 times working in the woods with one on, would have not liked to have seen what my pumpkin would have looked like with out one. My self I just wear a standard one with ear muffs climbing (the muffs keep it on better)..although I should get a good climbing helmet.

Great job Josh. I have to agree with them, any helmet is better than a trip to the hospital. Dropping one of those dead Sycamores down at my pa in laws, finished the face cut and started on the other side when the sky started raining limbs. Can't tell you what my pa in law called me after he threw my skull protector at my head. Live and learn. Great job.
