    immigration

It seems like what got the "felling the biggest tree" thread derailed was a comment about Mexicans, with the assumption being that they're all "bad" (whatever that means.) I think what was probably meant to be said was that ILLEGAL immigration is a really big problem. Not so much any specific ethnic group, but just the plain fact that way too many people are entering this country illegally.

I see nothing wrong with establishing a gauntlet at the borders, north and south, putting a total stop to illegal immigration. Let's return to the days of my great grandparents whereby you need a sponsor family in this country who will be responsible for you. They will make sure there's a job for you, that your papers are in order, that you're able to speak english prior to entering the country, that you have health care coverage, etc.

Someone said this country is a great melting pot. Well, it probably used to be, but now it's more of a mosaic. It seems most new immigrants want the benefits of living in America without actually becoming an American (speaking english, paying taxes, obeying the law, etc.).

I dont think it was stolen from the native americans, I think robbed would be a closer discription. Most nations have had simular experiences, Here we did some doozies , its whether we now take responsibility for it that matters.

If the you really wanted to stop mexican workers coming over illegally you could, but the fact is that they need them to get in and work hard for SFA. One of the guys on this site said a classic "its easier to teach a mexican to speak english than teach a white kid to work hard."

Mac... it's a sensitive, yet valid topic for discussion. (if everyone can keep their cool)

Facts is facts. The europeans came here and basically said to the indians (look up how they got to be called that) "Hey, nice place. Get the f**k out".

Kinda the same way the Israeli's got Israel.

The NZ eurpeans (pakeha) got there butts kicks by the natives (Maori) for quite some time, the Maroi were incredible warriors. Then later the Pakeha tried to make peace with this nations founding document- The Treaty of Waitangi. The thing is that it was translated by a guy who knew the Maori wouldnt sign the orginal agreement so he changed it a bit.
The result was that the founding document was signed but said different things depending on which side you were on.
Needless to say the Maori are still a little ticked at signing over there governing rights to fat old queen victoria!

Erik, can you support that statement with facts?

Let's see,......... mexicans..... or should I say "mexicans". The reality around theses parts is that there is alot of "mexicans", the term being used generically to describe hispanics regardless of their country. In fact, a high percentage of them are not mexicans. A true mexican is rare here now.

Didn't Bush just open the gate from Mexico? I think he did, not for citizenry, but for work. Why? Well even if they are not citizens, if they have papers they do pay taxes and will probably be the backbone of the social security program in the future.

Even if they immigrate here illegally, they can still get working papers. I had an Ecuadorian "mexican" working for me for 5 years, great guy. I'd watch the carpenters constantly chide him about the $60 a day he got paid. One day everyone was in the shop for lunch, we all sat at the same table, and since I'd had enough of the bullying and wise remarks, I asked this "mexican" in front of all, what the money he made translated to at home. His answer was about 30 to 1 (circa 1990) Then I did the math, just in case the americans missed it, and said "OK, guys, any of you hotshot, full book carpenters makin $1800 a day?" Well, that did sink in somewhat, lol!

This "mexican" would come here to work for 5 years and then go home and be treated like a King for the next 5. When he goes home, one of his brothers comes here and works the next 5 yrs, funneling the money made back home.

Sending the money home is a problem, but that's what happens and that I think is the big problem. Most are not here to be americans, they are here to feast on the hog and put back only a bare minimum to the economy in which they live. Now combine that non-spending with an americans job being eliminated as well, then extrapolate that into the future.........not pretty!

It wasn't that long ago, I had one of the best framing crews on the planet, we were ultimately undone by a bunch of "mexicans" from Europe. Russians as it were. Worst carpenters I ever saw. We had 5 guys, all pulling between 1500 to 2000 weekly. They had 30 freaking guys and it would take them twice as long to do anything and that which was done was done poorly. Apparently cheaper though. We went against them for a while beating them on every thing but price. Enter the Polacks, well just more of the same.......

.....And I says to the polack's helper( this guy is actually a Chezch) What do you do at home for work. His answer..."Oh, I own two restaurants"
Hmmmmmmmmm...... I must be doin something wrong!!!!!!!!!

My son is a U.S. border agent in AZ.They will catch anywhere from 3 to 300 people per night just at his station. The part that really gets to him is that if there is no warrants for them they take them back to the border and turn them loose, only to catch them again a few days later.
The part THAT REALLY MAKES NO SENSE is that is if they catch you and you are not Mexican they give you a bus ticket to what part of the U.S. they are trying to get to.People wonder how terrorist get in!

In a melting pot, all the cultures blend together, everyone speakes the same langauge. Picture a pan on the stove filled with different colored crayons if that helps.

A mosaic is a patchwork. Various colors, not blending.

Our culture was never a pure melting pot, the different cultures still maintained a large part of their unique identity, but there seemed to be a common theme that it was great to be an American, to speak English, and to strive for the dream.

What's the rest of the story?  I know of a Mexican who did that, too, but he'd collect the unemployment for his brother who'd just left while he was working as himself, and the next one in line would pick up the ball...
