    The Talk.

This is the talk that all Boys should hear when they become Men. There are only two types of people: people who do agree with these twelve points and practice them and people who don't. Which type of person are you?

I will develop myself to the maximum of my potential in all ways.

I will forget the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements.

I will always be in a positive frame of mind and convey this feeling to every person that I meet.

I will continually work at developing love, happiness and loyalty in my family and acknowledge that no other success can compensate for failure in the home.

I will look for the good in all people and make them feel worthwhile.

If I have nothing good to say about a person, I will say nothing.

I will give so much time to the improvement of myself that I will have no time to criticize others.

I will always be as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.

I will maintain an attitude of open-mindedness toward another persons viewpoint while still holding fast to that which I know to be true and honest.

I will maintain respect for those in authority and demonstrate this respect at all times.

I will always remain loyal to God, my country, family and my friends.

I will remain highly goal-oriented throughout my life because that positive attitude helps my family, my country, and myself.

This is a condensed version of, "The Talk."

Yes, I agree with this one.

Disagree with this one. Our mistakes need to be remembered so that we dont repeat them.

Disagree. Its only natural to be bummed sometimes. To be anything else requires meds, and I aint popping pills just to be continously happy.

    Agree

I will look for the good in all people and make them feel worthwhile.
Disagree. Some folks are idiots, and need to be dealt with accordingly.

Sorry man, I have to disagree with the idea that there are only two types of people. A well rounded person in my mind adheres to what he sees as right, and in no way do I see that you have to be classified in one of two ways to be a man. While I have been and always will be loyal to God, country, family, and my friends, when I see them acting like an idiot I tell them so. Sometimes they dont want to hear it, but sometimes they need to.

It wasn't fair to just say,"Man." I should have said, "Grownup." or, "Adult."

Everything when it gets boiled down is one of two things. Hot-Cold. Light-Dark. Every culture has recognized it. Eastern people say Yin-Yang. Other people Good-Evil. Electricians say Positive-Negative. Yes there is neutral also, but it goes nowhere and does nothing. Like a vacuum or potential energy--what is it, really? Nothing til someone pulls the plug or the trigger.

When you see an Idiot, there is many ways to fix that without telling them so. The best way is set an example. If someone in the group you influence does not respond favorably to that, you aren't in command of that situation in the first place. What good is debating an idiot?

Forgetting the mistakes of the past and pressing on to greater achievements. I forget mistakes because the lesson was supposed to be in real time. The past and future don't exist. To encumber yourself with the mistakes by not letting go of it is to not defrag your hard drive or to drive around on twelve pounds of air.

Positive Frame of Mind: There is only two states of anything. Popping pills wouldn't be sufficient, any how. That is neutral or negative no matter what it appears. Learn to look past how things appear and see how things are. Being happy and being in a positive frame of mind are sometimes not the same thing. That is what an Adult knows.

The part about I will give so much time to the improvement of myself that I will have no time to criticize others:
To do otherwise is the same as being afraid of death. Every minute someone fears death is a minute they might as well have been dead.
Spending time being a critic is time you wasted by not procuring resources or sharpening skills. If your left hand doesn't offer goods or services, then your right hand doesn't have any money in it. Criticism simply is potential energy at best--more neutral ground.

If someone gets handed authority that doesn't deserve it, they were merely given a title and are easily overthrown. Any thing not built on balance will eventually topple. When people build a rock garden, the temptation is to put boulders in an unnatural state when someone likes the color or shape of one side over another. Nature doesn't select things that way. She puts the center of gravity down, no matter about appearance. Henry Ford used to hire educated guys and put them on the line cause if what they learned at school was good, they were gonna rock and roll right out of there in no time.

Polls should always have the third option that reads, "Happy Birthday, SS." It's always his birthday. Don't ask me why.

And as for Avalancher's opinion, it's always worth while. He's a rare gem in the coal mine of humanity!

Ah yes, Opinions are like Avalanchers....

What about those who only agree with some of these principles? Lifes not simple enough to lump people into one of two groups

I will develop myself to the maximum of my potential in all ways.
Agree; you're doing yourself no favours by working below your potential

I will forget the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements.
Disagree. Learning from past mistakes is essential. Ignoring a mistake and continuing on down the same path regardless can be counter-productive

I will always be in a positive frame of mind and convey this feeling to every person that I meet.
Unrealistic. Even the most positive of people will feel down at one point or another - basic human emotions cannot be ignored. While striving to see all situations in a postive light is good, sometimes it is just not possible.

I will continually work at developing love, happiness and loyalty in my family and acknowledge that no other success can compensate for failure in the home.
Agree. It all starts at home.

I will look for the good in all people and make them feel worthwhile.
Disagree. Some people are scum, no two ways about it. It's a harsh call to make, but I'll stand by it.

If I have nothing good to say about a person, I will say nothing.
Disagree. Every now and again someone will need a reality check, for their own good or for the good of others around them.

I will give so much time to the improvement of myself that I will have no time to criticize others.
Disagree. Not sure if it is just the way this principle is worded but it seems as if abiding by it would make a person very self-centred. Also seems as if constructive criticism is not aken into account.

I will always be as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.
Agree. Success is good, regardless of whose success it is.

I will maintain an attitude of open-mindedness toward another persons viewpoint while still holding fast to that which I know to be true and honest.
Agree. You can't hear the full story from one side, and should respect others views if you want thems to respect yours.

I will maintain respect for those in authority and demonstrate this respect at all times.
Agree. Doing otherwise doesn't make anything easier for either party.

I will always remain loyal to God, my country, family and my friends.
Disagree. I do not believe in any higher power of any kind, and while loyalty is very important, it must also be earned and reciprocated.

I will remain highly goal-oriented throughout my life because that positive attitude helps my family, my country, and myself.
Agree. Setting goals and working to achieve them is what gets things done.

Thoughts and comments are more than welcome.

Life is the simplest thing possible. Living is what's complex. People will lump themselves into one of two groups.

Nobody told you to ignore mistakes. Pressing on to greater achievements may very well mean getting off the path you were on.

I learn only from success. The reason even the best minds use no more than ten percent of it is because they do not master this one basic skill.

Men of worth see victory where most men see nothing. I thought you said, "Success is good, regardless of whose success it is." If there's no two ways about it, which way is it?

I hope you come back and expand on this one. I want to see how the same guy who refuses one principle on the basis that it would make him self-centered considers there to be no higher power than himself. Alternatively, if you mean you are also powerless, then you do not exist. If everything has equal power, nothing exists.

Not believing in god does not make someone self-centered. Focussing on your own needs above those of others makes you self-centered. Admittedly everyone places their own needs higher than those of others a lot of the time, it for each of us to decide when this gets to the point of disadvantaging others for our own gain (i.e being selfish)

"If everything has equal power, nothing exists" really? How exactly did you come to this conclusion?

As for the rest of your remarks in regard to my comments on the principles; like one of them states "I will maintain an attitude of open-mindedness to others viewpoints" or something to that extent. You have given me a couple of things to think about over a beer, so thanks for the feedback. As far as following all the principles, each to their own i guess.

"Disagree. I do not believe in any higher power of any kind" When you said this you either meant there is nothing more powerful than you, which is the essence of selfishness; that you have no power because nothing has it; or that everything has equal power in which case not even atoms could move--thus nothing exists. Which is it or offer me a better explanation.
