You know what?I really dont care what BH did. It doesnt concern me. I offered my support for the simple reason that I have never seen him cast a bad word around here, dissed folks who had a different opinion than his, or in general acted like an ass. Wish I could say the same about myself, because truth be known, I am an ass in real life. And sometimes that leaks out around here.

But here, I find that for the most part folks accept me for who I am, what I am about, and show little concern for the skeletons in my closet. If i care to share them, often I get the "wow, you ought not to have done that" but for the most part, judgement is withheld about my character. And is there really a reason why the same can not be shown to BH?

I have a lot of friends around here, least I think I do. They may not be the same kind of friends that I have met face to face, but does that really change what a friend is, or can be? Take a look over on the saw boards, and over there you will find several threads where members chipped in and helped a guy out of a hard time. How many of those guys actually met him face to face?Far less than half I am willing to bet, yet there they were, handing out a portion of their paycheck to help the guy out.Would you do that for just anyone on the internet?I hope not.

Gentlemen(and ladies, I have not forgotten about you, trust me)we should all be above that. We have all suffered through some rough times together, wether you admit it or not. Are you really going to tell me that once you pulled away from your keyboard, you completely forgot the passing of one of our members recently?Really? Deeker and his family grieved me a lot, was included in our prayers over the dinner table, and was on my mind a great deal that week when we heard the news. Yet I never met him in real life. But I still called him a friend.
We have banned together to root out a con man that was ramping up to take anything and everything we care to give to the guy. We have watched from afar as our wives gave birth to our children, and offered condolences when our trusty dogs passed away. And I dare any of you to deny that a tear didnt hit your keyboard in sympathy as you remembered your own dog passing in the past. I know I have.

I have been here for five years, and over the years I have seen members come, and members go. But all through that time, one thing has never changed, and that is the very essence of companionship and camaraderie, held together by our common interests and our respect for each other as men(and women). Instead of slamming a member for a conflicting story, I suggest we remember the good times we all have shared with Bounty Hunter, remember the Bounty Hunter that we do know right here, and reserve judgement for when it is either asked for, or warranted. If he was asking for donations to support his legal cause, we are entitled to know the facts. If he asked us what we thought about the situation, or if we were on a jury deciding his fate, we would entitled to the facts. But the truth is, none of us have been called to serve on the jury, Bounty Hunter has not asked for a dime, and all he did in its entirety was ask for the support that any friend would give.

Bounty Hunter, you have my support and friendship until you ask me to judge your case, sit on the jury, or you want part of my paycheck. Then, and only then, you are going to have to fill in the blanks.

And if it helps any of you else out there, I would do the same damn thing for you too.

Well, that's a narrow view of the word 'friend,' (and it differs from the one you give below) I've sent saw mufflers off to someone here on AS, he modded them and sent them back - all on a gentleman's agreement that I'd only pay for shipping. I paid for more than that and he could have cheated me as easily as I could have cheated him. We did neither, and I'm happy to call him a friend. I'd call a great many people here friends, and yet I've only met one of you in person. A friend is a friend whether you've seen their face or not. It's the interaction that makes a friend, not being able to recognize their face.

Now THAT is a good definition of a friend - or at least a good process for determining a friend, and that can happen on the internet. Knowing someone face-to-face doesn't necessarily mean they are honest or easier to verify their words. I would say that with every friend I have here on AS, I have (by your own definition) "known them on a personal level and interacted with them over a period of time in order to assess their values and character." Takes longer online, but when somebody I've never met in person sends me a fancy and expensive climbing helmet just because he's concerned about my safety, I'd call that friendship, and darn good one at that. (Thanks again for that helmet, E.K. I think of you every time I use it.)

I'd give Space credit for being cautious about making a complete judgment before having all the facts - he's right in that aspect, (but then he goes and judges him anyway) but on the other hand, it's none of our business at all, frankly, and it makes perfect sense that B.H. is rather ashamed of his actions and not entirely wanting to admit online all of his faults. If someone burst into my home all dressed in black and not shouting "Police" then there's a pretty good chance there would be shots fired. It's just downright foolish for any cop to enter a private residence without identifying themselves.

But we don't know if that is what happened with B.H., and since it's none of my business, I'm not going to even ask for details. If B.H. (or his wife) wishes to present them to us, then that's fine, but based on the info we've been given, he's either guilty or not, he either did a reasonable thing or not, but we're not the judge or jury that will be trying him, so we ought to back off on the pre-judging and let the poor sap alone. He's got enough to deal with now, and negative, judgmental people are only hurting him right now.
Good post! I do have a problem with this bit:

If someone burst into my home all dressed in black and not shouting "Police" then there's a pretty good chance there would be shots fired."

I agree but if it ever did happen it was a total violation of both their training and their Policy & Procedure manual. Even on "No knock warrants" it is "smash door and scream "Police" and keepon screaming "police" as the team enters" Purpose is to avoid exactly what you posted as must as possible.

For someone to be a "friend" I have to know them on a personal level and interact with them over a period of time in order to assess their values and character. The Internet is a faceless medium where there is no ability to gauge the veracity of the statements being made or determine the source of the material. I may be old fashioned, but I value my reputation and will not align myself with ideas, viewpoints or individuals that I can't objectively assess and independently verify.

It seems that Space is the only one brave enough to raise valid questions and ask for facts, the remainder are extolling the virtues of an individual who violated the law that they have never met. It is funny how critical people are of saws and sellers that they encounter in this hobby via the internet, yet accept at face value that anyone on this forum that encounters trouble has somehow been wronged. Blindly following others will do more long term harm to this country than any criminals ever will.
Have you ever participated in an act of charity on this board without knowing precisely all the facts and knowing them to be the truth beyond all doubt? I have, and it feels good. You might have been taken, but your heart was in the right place. All that said, I'm pretty sure you would never be my friend, and I'm good with that too.

Why not? A trial transcript is a verbatim record of the proceedings in a case that is recorded by an independent court reporter. No bias there, each side has the opportunity to present their case, examine the evidence and cross examine the witnesses and make a closing argument and rebuttal in front of the jury.

Why do you need so much information to wish someone well?Nobody asked for anything else as far as I can see. It's much like the good morning thread, get it?Some guy you chat with on here occasionally gets on here and says "hey guys, I'm having some trouble, be back later".That's really about all you need to know to say."Hey buddy, hope it works out for you"You know, try to be positive, maybe cheer them up a little. That's it.

So just what is wrong with doing that but also wanting a few details? Human nature and all of that. That several of us would like the 'back story' has nothign at all to do with wishing him well and helping him out if needed.

Here is a idea. How bout you guys go start your own thread where you can argue over who has a better way with words, and what not. Nobody cares! This was a support thread for the bounty hunter family.
I consider a lot of these guys on here friends. I figure I could show up at their house, knock on the door, and they would treat me just like family. Which is what I do when someone shows up to a GTG. Ive never met a lot of the members, but the ones I have are good as gold. Bounty Hunter is ok in my book, and Id like to meet him one day. We share common interests in trucks (K10s and K20S) Guns, Freedom, Chainsaws.. etc. Its just like meeting a stranger, you dont ever know their past. So just let it go!

You seem sort of dense and unable to grasp the over reaching aspect of what I was trying to convey. You are correct, I have done absolutely nothing charitable towards the Bounty Hunter episode, other than feeling some empathy towards a fellow As'er. Many of us here will never know another on a personal level, but we can base our opinions on what transpires on many posts.
