aren't those digital meters also called "smart meters"?

they can control your usage from the main office with those and they can even just drive by with a scanner and take readings.
    always on.......slightly off

The ones here are, well they're radio read actually. They can't control usage, but instead of getting out at every house to check the meter, they just drive down the road with a lap top open and it reads the meters. They are digital. I think they will read up to 2,000 feet too.

We've put in a lot of radio read water meters lately too, seems to be the new thing.

Not sure about your area but around here we can "shop around" for electricity suppliers.
Our city govt just negotiated a per kwh rate of about 4.15 cents . This is 36% lower then what Ameren would charge. My FIL got a similar rate going with another electricity supplier.

Yep. That's what they did here about three years ago.

Being that we're served by Can't Light And Power...they're now asking for a rate increase to go around again and install "smart meters" that will also include usage-by-hour information. Because, you know, it would've been too much to install them when you installed the radio read units three years ago.

Not everyone can change power companies. You can because Illinois is a deregulated state. Ameren customers in MO are bound because MO is still a "regulated" state. I'm not sure which other states are deregulated.

First time I've ever heard of Illinois being referred to as a "deregulated" State.

Toledo Ed changed out the meter sometime this afternoon. Now just have to wait on the old meter to get tested.

Well got the results from their exhaustive testing today. Everything is honky-dory with your old meter, so get ready for big bill next month. Still do not understang how it can go from say 20-30kw a day to over 800kw a day. Without burning the house down.

What kind of daily readings are you getting with the new meter. 800 is pretty high considering mine runs around 1200 for the whole month.

Know a lady who is on the board of the local REA Coop. She said with the equipment they have today the computer would have caught a spike like that. She also said someone would have been out pronto to check it out. They can check the meter on site to see if reading within specs. Toledo Ed seems to have trouble finding their butt with both hands.

The meter was put in on 6-12 had 26 kws on 6-13, 40 kws on 6-14 and 57 kws on 6-15. So we are upto about 60 kws over about 3 days which is reasonable when compared to usage from years past.
