yup it can get botryosphaeria (bot) canker and nectria. yours looks like bot obtusa canker, see p. 126 in the Sinclair/Lyon Diseases book. Entered through sunscald and bark splits at the forks.
check roots, then treat by taking off dead tissue, sanitizing with hydrogen peroxide, and applying a sealant where cracking is likely.
yeah outside the box maybe but what do you have to lose?
