038 Oil Pick up Question

What's the best way to remove the oil pick up from an 038 mag? The workshop manual shows some sort of special tool. I'm hoping that you all will have some alternative!

Needle nose or forceps seem logical but I want to make sure I don't do something stooopid!

I just want to ensure the pick up filter is clean.

A piece of a wire coat hanger with a crook at one end will reach in there and grab your pick up hose. Good luck..
