Any "ethical" ways to practice spiking up trees?

Hard to say. Time will tell. His "About" information seems plausible, and this is certainly a part of the world where spur climbing is widely accepted. In this area, if you try climbing a tree without spurs, folks presume you don't know what you are doing, and just don't have the right equipment.

Honestly. I'm not making that up.
I've been asked only once or twice a year weather or not I prune with spikes lol, and yeah the "old timers" here that "used to cut trees" all seem to think we need spikes all the time

sometimes I might throw them on for a prune, once im at the limb thats coming off if I have to do some funky work to get out to the tips, but never spiking anything that's staying

EDIT
also those old timers, when they do see me using spikes tell me "you need tree spikes, those are pole spikes" (as im wearing my 2 3/4" buckinghams lol)
