Basswood is nice to work with a little on the heavy side . I use it for the heads ,it's pretty tuff as far as light wood goes .Paulownia for the bodies it's nice , light and stable .White pine for the bodies is good too but watch if you leave them in the hot sun , the sap will bleed through the paint .
 
tupelo is straight grained and carves well. i have also heard others that use paulonia. have fun and keep carving
