I have two crimson maples in my front yard that were planted three years ago. One of them is doing great and is covered with leaves. The other looks like it is dead with no leaves or buds of any kind. The bark is peeling and curling from around the base of the tree. The odd thing is that the tree is growing taller. It is about three feet taller than the other. I am hoping that there is something I can do to save it. I am new at this and would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thanks!!
Lucy

I know in my experience working at a tree farm. The whips have the nitrogen put to them, hard. Ive seen 3/4 whips go in, and be sold in 2 years as 2" to 3" caliper B&B. Its possible that the trees you got were "forced" such as I described. Some dont like it, grow like a weed, and then peter out. Others do just fine.

However, it could be a number of other things...a few pictures would help in the diagnosis.
