Fireplace Grate in an OWB

Was over at my fathers a couple weeks ago and was sitting in front of his fireplace, and noticed that under the grate, there were very few coals, and lots of nice fine ash. So last weekend I cleaned out my Woodmaster and noticed ALOT of small coals in with the ashes I was shoveling out. Got me to thinking, would it help get better efficiency and more complete combustion of the wood if I were to put in a fireplace grate to keep the wood up out of the ash? Or would it be a waste of time and money? Anyone try it? If not I might give it a sho this weekend
