OK. After reading AS about the Makita saws I was ready go squeeze a bit more out of Paypal and get a DCS401 to use as a trim saw. Found a couple for sale, but then when I went to the Makita site the model isn't listed!
They show a 34, 460, 510, 540, and 6401.
Has the 401 been dropped from the line? Seems like a big, unfilled gap between the 34 and 460.

Are all their models German-made?

All the saws you mention are made in Germany by Dolmar.
The Dolmar PS-341 and PS-401 have been replaced by the PS-350 and PS-420, just happened a few months ago.

I believe the Dolmar PS-540 has been gone for a long time, so I'm surprised that Makita's web page still shows the DCS-540.
I have no idea where I would buy a new, not refurbished, 540, but I can get my hands on a new 341 or 401 quite easily.

The 460 and 510 are pretty much the same saw, except the 510 has a larger bore and makes more power. (like comparing a 341 to a 401)

What changes did they make to the "upgraded" models? Anything significant?

The 420 will probably trickle down to Makita eventually. Maybe they ran out of blue paint! :)

The 341 and 401 are based on 1980's designs, similar to the 540. The 350 and 420 are new from the ground up, similar to the 460 and 510. The new ones are smoother, the old ones have better power to weight ratios and are cheaper.
