Log Scale

What are the Pro's and Con's of the different log scales (international,doyle,ect.) which ones favor the seller and which ones favor the mill??

I am not sure the answer but I remember reading the size of the logs makes the difference.

in my area the doyle scale is used and i believe they all favor the mill

I'm selling ash to a mill here and they use the doyle scale too.Just want to know the difference between all of them.Does anyone know????

If the mill buy's by the Doyle scale, that's what you'll have to sell by in my experience.
They're all pretty close, some favor larger diameter log's, and some smaller. There are also figures built in for taper, but that's usually a concideration on long log's.
Bottom line is: You have to sell by the scale that the mill is buying by.

Here they buy grade timber by the Doyle scale. They buy saw logs by the International scale.

That's the way it works here too.

I think Doyle is best used on large diameter logs. International scale is whats used in NH and has a 1/4 inch kerf built in. With a bandmill you should gain at least 10% on international scale.
