Mac Recoil

I picked up a free 1-80 today. It pulled over enough to see that I have fire but then the recoil quit engaging. I pulled the recoil off and it's full of thick sludge that smells like old fuel, this gunk was keeping the pawls from retracting. I take it that this stuff ain't `sposed to be there? Where this this slime come from? Thanks for any help, this is the first recoil (or saw for that matter) like this I have ever worked on.

Probably a leaky crank seal. They can make a mess.
