is there a Dolmar equivalent to the Makita 540????

i found a used 540 for $135, but when i was looking at the Makita website i noticed that it list it as a 54cc saw with only 2.2hp. when i looked at the Dolmar site for an equivalent the closest i could find in hp rating was the ps 350 at 35cc. the weights of both saws are listed as 10.5lbs.

The DCS540 is the PS-540 in blue. Both are now discontinued models. 2.2hp isn't correct, and I seem to recall 3.3hp. My 026 and 353 have similar hp ratings, but the 540 will handily outcut them. It cuts more like a MS290 which is rated at 3.8hp. The peak hp rating doesn't always reflect the way it will actually perform. Powerhead weight is probably closer to 11#.

The 540 is a great deal at $135 if its in good shape.

well, i feel pretty stupid now. i rechecked the Makita specs and i was looking at the KW rating. the hp ratings are the same as the Dolmar. too much to do, not enough time to get it all done!!!!!

Lets not get too carried away here! The 026 and MS260 are great saws. There are other excellent saws in that weight and displacement range as well, and the 540s are among them. Their weight is reasonable, they're very well built, and cut pretty strongly for 54cc.

Also some video of the new Dolmar 420, I think AS member 166 posted it. A smaller saw in the 40cc range, but seem to well built as per specs and reviews. Check it out. Lots of big pics  .

I am pretty sure the 540 comes with a weight penalty, and I am far from convinsed that they normally outcut the 260 and 353.

The engine is in fact a pretty modest 54cc one - compare to the Husky 254xp etc.....

Troll,
You're correct on the weight penalty, and I've already mentioned the 540 weighs in at 11#. I do have the 353 and 026 in the garage to compare directly with the 540....and 346xp and MS290. C'mon over an try'em for yourself! If you're a good boy I might even let ya try the 066 with big bore!

Troll, It's hard to argue with someone that has all of them. How much do your 353, 346xp and 026 wiegh on a good scale, I'd guess the 026 would be the lightest. We'll leave the 290 out of the wieght department. Steve
