I have two makita 540s boath were 3/8x18 7 pin,now .325x16n/c 8 pin,with mufflar mods and carb tweaks,they rock in 14in and under wood.I set these up for mainly limbing. The question is will a makita 6401 gaine anything going from 3/8x20 7 pin to 3/8x18 8 pin with the mods,cutting mostly 18 to 20in wood?? Or will a 64cc saw pull a 8 pin?........

I have a 7900

and I think it is faster with the seven tooth. But I have never actually tested it.. against itself. I just know that Shipper50s on its first tank of fuel beat mine with his running a 7 and mine running and 8. And mine was well broken in..
So I would say the 6400 is best suited with a 7 tooth gear
