OK, I've decided I own one of the early 026 and the four-hole muffler doesn't need any modifications. Really, if my memory is still good I do believe I bought it new in '92-'93, which I believe makes it first year production.

Anyway, it hasn't seen much use for about 12-13 years, just some yard clean-up type stuff but I'm cuttin' in earnest again. In the past, I always tuned the carb by "ear" and left it (what I believed to be) just a touch rich for safety sake. Now I see that a tachometer is so cheap that only a fool wouldn't own one if'n he's gonna' do his own tuning. So I've done some searching on maximum RPM, and just like the muffler it seems the 026 when through some changes... I'm finding 12,500 (which seems low) to 14,000 (which seems high).

Anybody know? Got the straight skinny?

024 and 024 super was rated at 13,000 rpms
026/260 at 14,000 rpms

I know for sure the early 024s had the old type flat rods and old style rod bearings and believe that is why the lower rpms.
