Hi folks, don't normally post here but I had some questions about milling. I plan on doing a search and was hoping for some links to maybe get me started. We have a few partly uprooted cherry trees on the property, 18-22'' approx at the base and I figured instead of just turnin them into firewood I'd like to try to salvage any wood for boards, etc. out of them that I can. I'm really not trying to spend much money at this time until I get things figured out, so the cheaper the plan the better.

Check out this recent post, it explains some basic options if you want to do it on the cheap. How cheap depends on what saw(s) you have already. You need a fairly big saw for milling, but in a pinch you CAN get away with a 60cc saw if you don't mill real wide stuff and have lots of time to do it. You are right, it would be a shame to burn good cherry trees that would make some beautiful lumber.

If you want to get a little more serious, read through this thread when you have some time.

Thanks alot for the info! I dropped the biggest cherry the other day and it had a tiny amount of punkyness in the middle- just enough to make it no good for milling. Well, at least I'll enjoy the nice smell and heat from it next winter
